Phuc Sinh is the first Vietnamese enterprise to receive foreign funding for sustainable development goals. However, it was not when Phuc Sinh Group became a leading brand in the agricultural sector that it pursued green economic thinking. Because businessman Phan Minh Thong - founder of Phuc Sinh Group in 2001, from the very beginning of his business, had the awareness to act for the environment and the climate.
Vietnam's accession to the WTO in 2007 has created many opportunities for domestic enterprises, but also challenges in terms of strict requirements on quality, food safety, and competition with foreign enterprises. Vietnam's agricultural sector faces difficulties due to limited processing technology, low product quality, while market demand is increasingly stringent. In addition, climate change with droughts, floods and extreme weather has severely affected production and farmers' livelihoods, along with consequences from biodiversity loss and chemical abuse in farming.
Under pressure from customers and the market, Phuc Sinh has implemented a sustainable development project to support farmers, protect the environment, and increase the value of Vietnamese coffee and pepper in the international market. The project not only meets the needs and enhances product competitiveness, but also helps farmers raise awareness, apply science and technology, focus on human rights, protect the environment and ecosystem, and contribute to preserving natural resources for future generations.
In 2010, Phuc Sinh started a sustainable project in Dak Lak, facing many challenges in language and cultural differences when approaching local farmers. After initial failures, the company was not discouraged, but instead strengthened the local team and built trust with the community. In 2014, the project achieved UTZ (now Rainforest Alliance) sustainability certification, helping farmers increase their income, improve farming techniques and raise awareness of environmental protection. The project not only increased the value of Vietnamese coffee but also attracted many international customers.
Phuc Sinh continues to expand the project to Dak Nong, Ba Ria-Vung Tau, Son La provinces and expands annually. The goal is to support sustainable livelihoods for farmers, raise awareness of environmental protection, respond to climate change, and promote organic farming. The company aims to develop green, clean and sustainable agriculture, contributing to the sustainable development of Vietnam's agriculture.
Phuc Sinh Group has an initiative to build a circular economic model in coffee production in Son La: Using Arabica coffee husks instead of throwing them away, Phuc Sinh has produced Cascara tea. This not only helps reduce environmental pollution but also creates a high-value, profitable product, and keeps the coffee production cycle closed, without generating waste.ripe coffee berries.
At the same time, Phuc Sinh Group also implemented a model of organic pepper cultivation in the Central Highlands. In Dak Nong and Dak Lak, Phuc Sinh has supported farmers with organic fertilizers and biological pesticides, and provided a team of experts to closely accompany them. The project organizes field training for farmers on organic farming techniques, pest risk management, and environmental protection, thereby helping farmers improve productivity and product quality in a sustainable manner.
Phuc Sinh not only works with farmers in the project but also invites non-participating farmers to learn and improve their techniques. This expands the model’s influence to the surrounding community, raising people’s awareness of environmental protection and sustainable agricultural development. Furthermore, Phuc Sinh has built strong relationships with farmers and international customers, helping farmers understand the value of organic farming and bringing Vietnamese coffee products to the international market, while building the image of Vietnam as a place of sustainable, environmentally friendly production.
Phuc Sinh's initiative to build a circular economy in the coffee production process in Son La and the model pepper growing programs following organic farming in the Central Highlands not only aim to improve the productivity and quality of coffee and pepper but also contribute to building a sustainable agricultural ecosystem, protecting the environment and improving farmers' lives, increasing income, raising awareness, protecting the environment... Building a circular economic development direction in agricultural production, building an environmentally friendly product chain. Through that, Phuc Sinh hopes to move towards a sustainable development future for Vietnam's agricultural sector.
In 2025, entering the era of national development, Phuc Sinh Group plans to continue expanding the model coffee growing model in Son La, focusing on the organic certification process. The goal is to build a large number of model coffee gardens with Organic certification by 2030, to spread sustainable farming techniques and experiences to more farmers.
Phuc Sinh’s projects have brought higher incomes to coffee and pepper farmers, while raising their awareness of protecting their health, the environment, and maintaining biodiversity in their gardens. This helps protect soil nutrients, reduce erosion and greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, people living around the project area also benefit, when they have the opportunity to access science and technology and directly observe the effectiveness of sustainable farming processes through model demonstrations. The project also helps Phuc Sinh produce high-quality products, stand out in the international market and achieve geographical indications with two products: Son La Blue Arabica Coffee and Son La Blue Cascara Tea.
Phuc Sinh Group aims to improve farmers' knowledge of techniques, apply science and technology to sustainable farming, help them master knowledge of organic agriculture, thereby improving production processes, increasing productivity, reducing production costs, enhancing biodiversity in the garden. In addition, it also helps farmers build awareness of environmental protection, natural resource protection and spread the spirit of sustainable farming and adaptation to climate change.
Businessman Phan Minh Thong shared: “Farmers increase their income thanks to sustainable farming, improve their living standards, access scientific and technical knowledge and apply it to farming. In addition, biodiversity and precious timber trees planted in the garden will increase the coverage (shade) of the garden, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and in the future will have high economic value for farmers.
We encourage cooperation and connection between farmers, creating a stronger community, supporting and developing together to build a sustainable, organic farming system, reducing the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, raising awareness of the importance of sustainable development, thereby changing the habits and behaviors of the community. Because the voice and spread from farmers to each other are more easily connected than the voice from businesses.
Phuc Sinh Group's sustainable development journey is not only based on profit figures but also actively spreading the spirit of clean products, green agriculture, clean environment, and civilized community.
