Phu Yen Online - Urgently regulate water, save summer-autumn rice

Báo Phú YênBáo Phú Yên15/08/2023

The prolonged heat has caused more than 1,000 hectares of summer-autumn rice in localities at the stage of heading and milk ripening to lack irrigation water, potentially greatly affecting productivity. Faced with this situation, on August 14, Comrade Le Tan Ho, Member of the Provincial Party Standing Committee, Permanent Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee, together with leaders of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dong Cam Irrigation One Member Co., Ltd. (Dong Cam Company) inspected the actual drought situation and drought prevention work.

The working group inspected some drought-affected rice areas in the fields and irrigation canals in Hoa Dong, Hoa My Dong (Tay Hoa district), and Hoa Tri (Phu Hoa district). According to Dong Cam Company, in the 2023 summer-autumn crop, the unit provides irrigation water for more than 18,000 hectares of rice in Tay Hoa, Phu Hoa, Tuy An districts, Dong Hoa town, and Tuy Hoa city. Recently, due to prolonged heat, combined with southwest winds, while the amount of water reaching the Dong Cam irrigation dam is not guaranteed, leading to a shortage of water, many rice areas are locally lacking water.

In the fields of Dieu Ga, Phu Pho, Ben Cui, Dong Co, Quang Trai in Hoa My Dong commune, there are 170 hectares of rice lacking water. While visiting the rice field, Mr. Vo Ngoc Dai worried: “My family has more than 5 sao of rice in the milk stage, so it really needs water for irrigation. In the past few days, I have tried every way to get water into the field to save the rice, otherwise it will affect the yield.”

Similarly, in the north of the Dong Cam irrigation system, drought is also occurring in many rice fields. Many rice fields in the stage of heading and milk ripening lack water, causing the rice shoots to burn yellow, the rice stalks to weaken, and to bend under the harsh sunlight. Mr. Le Van Muoi in Hoa Tri commune said: “My family’s 7 sao of rice will be harvested in about a month. The prolonged harsh sunlight causes the rice fields to lack water, and the rice plants cannot grow. I hope the irrigation unit and local authorities will soon help people fight the drought and save the rice in time.”

Mr. Chau Dinh Tu, Head of the Nam Canal Irrigation Station, said: This summer-autumn crop, the station serves to irrigate 7,742 hectares of rice, currently about 575 hectares in the fields at the end of the canals are lacking irrigation water. In order to save the rice in time, in the past few days, the station staff has been on duty, checking and assessing the actual water source at the head of the canals under the management unit; at the same time, operating anti-drought pumping stations and some field electric pumping stations to pump water from the drainage canal water source to the canal levels.

Mr. Le Thanh Danh, Director of Dong Cam Company, said: In the face of severe drought, the company has deployed many drought-fighting pumping stations in Ben Loi, Hoa Dong, Hoa My Dong areas and some field pumping stations of agricultural cooperatives in the fields to save rice. Up to now, some drought-affected rice areas under the company's irrigation system have been supplied with water. The company continues to coordinate with localities to regulate and provide enough water for all drought-affected rice areas.

Also according to Mr. Danh, if the hot weather continues and the drought-stricken rice area continues to increase, the company recommends that the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development advise the Provincial People's Committee to consult with the Electricity Corporation and the National Power System Control Center to direct the Song Hinh Hydropower Plant and the Song Ba Ha Hydropower Plant to release water for production, ensuring a stable flow of 40m3 /second.

The hot weather is still complicated, Dong Cam Company needs to proactively coordinate with hydropower plants to find solutions to overcome the shortage of irrigation water as soon as possible. Irrigation stations and local authorities continue to mobilize more field pumps to fight drought, not to let rice lack water.
