In recent days, due to the influence of cold air, there has been prolonged heavy rain in the province, causing many areas of winter-spring rice 2024-2025 and crops in localities to be deeply flooded, causing severe damage.

Recorded in Tay Hoa district, due to heavy rain from the evening of February 23 to the morning of February 24, many rice and cassava areas of people in the communes of Hoa My Dong, Hoa Thinh, Hoa My Tay, Hoa Tan Tay... were deeply flooded.

Mr. Duong Van Tu in Xuan My village, Hoa My Dong commune, pointed to his family's flooded rice field and said: My family has 5 sao of rice that is in the final stage of tillering, preparing to form ears, but has been deeply submerged in water for the past few days, making me very worried. Because at this stage, if the rice is flooded, it will greatly affect the growth of the plant. I hope the rain will stop in the next few days so that we can find a way to drain the water from the field in time to save the rice.

Looking blankly at his family's nearly 3,500m2 cassava field, nearly 60 days old, deeply submerged in water, Mr. Phan Van Thang in My Canh village, Hoa Thinh commune worriedly said: This is the first time we have encountered heavy rain and flooding in January, so people have suffered heavy losses. Flooded rice plants will have reduced productivity, but flooded cassava plants will have rotten roots and die completely.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Huyen Tran, Head of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Tay Hoa district, said: Due to heavy rains from February 23 to now, 1,246 hectares of rice in the district (50-60 days after sowing) have been deeply flooded, many areas of rice and rice plants have died and drifted ashore. In addition, 1,252 hectares of cassava in the starch accumulation stage have been flooded and completely damaged. The total damage is estimated at about 9.1 billion VND. Currently, the locality is supporting people to overcome the consequences of natural disasters.

According to the Phu Yen Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection, in the 2024-2025 winter-spring crop, the whole province sowed more than 26,600 hectares of rice and 23,774 hectares of cassava. Due to the prolonged heavy rains from February 22 to present, the water level on the rivers has increased, leading to many areas of rice and crops of local people being deeply flooded, causing significant damage. Of which, nearly 3,500 hectares of winter-spring rice were flooded, and more than 1,250 hectares of crops (mainly cassava) were flooded, concentrated in the districts of Tay Hoa, Dong Hoa, Phu Hoa, and Tuy An.
