Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên02/05/2024

Experience the first grade environment

Ms. Le Cam Linh, Principal of Son Ca 14 Kindergarten, Phu Nhuan District, said that the school will arrange a simulated classroom like a primary school classroom so that children from 5 to 6 years old (preschool class) can get used to the environment of grade 1.

These classrooms used as mock classrooms will not have shelves of supplies or toys, but will have notebooks, pencils, boards, etc. Children will sit properly following the teacher's instructions for 15 minutes. This will give children the experience and learning to be serious when entering first grade, such as sitting in order, in the right place, sitting properly, and focusing on performing activities in class.

Children in the kindergarten class at Thanh Pho Kindergarten in the classroom get acquainted with writing and the first grade environment, with teachers observing the class.

"Teachers teaching kindergarten must have a serious demeanor, show strictness but be friendly, speak without a lisp, pronounce correctly, write correctly and accurately, and importantly, have no spelling mistakes," said Ms. Linh.

Not only implementing a simulated classroom to prepare children for first grade, Ms. Linh said that the school also has ways to help children get acquainted with discipline, rules, and regulations when entering first grade in all educational activities. "In all school activities, teachers pay attention to training children to focus and listen to the teacher's requests, follow instructions, and know how to complete their work before doing other work. Children who follow the rules in the classroom, if they do it correctly, will be praised and rewarded. Every year, our school also organizes for children and their parents to visit a real elementary school at Pham Ngoc Thach Elementary School, Ward 13, Phu Nhuan District, so that children are not surprised when they are about to enter first grade," Ms. Linh said.

Invite parents to attend the mock class

At Phu My Kindergarten, District 7, there are many activities to prepare children for grade 1, closely following the preschool education program of the Ministry of Education and Training in 5 areas of child development: physical, cognitive, language, emotional - social skills and aesthetics. Recently, the school organized the Golden Bell contest in the buds and leaves groups, this is also one of the activities to help children confidently enter grade 1.

Ms. Pham Bao Hanh, Principal of Phu My Kindergarten, District 7, said that the school will soon open simulated classrooms in kindergartens according to the instructions of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City. Each 15-minute period, children will be trained in discipline, sitting properly, raising their hands when speaking, taking and putting away learning materials... as required. In these classrooms, activities will be organized for 5-6 year old children to get acquainted with writing and math, and parents will be invited to attend classes to see how teachers introduce children to math and writing at preschool level. From there, parents can accompany the school and their children to enter grade 1 in a gentle, stress-free manner.

Don't wait until your child is 5 to prepare.

Recently, the Preschool Education Department, Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, organized a training session for managers and preschool teachers on "Guidelines for parents to prepare 5-year-old children for grade 1". Accordingly, to prepare a solid foundation for children to enter grade 1, at each age of the child, teachers need to pay attention to the expected results to help children gradually perfect the necessary knowledge and skills; that is, teachers must prepare the foundation for children right from when they enter school, not wait until they are 5 years old.

According to the Department of Preschool Education, preparing children for first grade requires teachers to not only help children be mentally ready, develop well in physical, language, cognitive, emotional - social skills but also form basic skills and necessary life skills. Such as self-service skills: eating by themselves, changing clothes by themselves, taking care of personal hygiene: combing hair, washing hands, cleaning private areas after going to the toilet (especially girls). Teachers need to teach children to prepare learning materials with teachers before and after school; train children to get up early...

At Son Ca 14 Kindergarten, Phu Nhuan District, teachers teach children how to prepare necessary materials for learning in grade 1; help children understand their responsibility to prepare for learning; the school also provides necessary materials such as pencils and boards so that children can use these materials effectively early. The study corner is built with a variety of exercises, allowing children to do activities every week, suitable to their abilities.

When building a math familiarization environment, teachers pay attention to the content of numbers, adding and subtracting, separating and combining, getting familiar with the plus and minus signs (using accompanying images), assembling shapes, measuring, arranging in order over and over again; having tools for children to use and taking advantage of opportunities to teach children anytime, anywhere. Teachers also pay attention to the writing familiarization environment and sign language...

How do parents accompany their children?

At this time, many parents whose children are about to enter first grade are worried and confused, not knowing how their children will be when they enter first grade, whether they will be able to study, get used to the new environment, and new learning methods.

According to educators, this should not be done; instead, parents should accompany their children. At Son Ca 14 Kindergarten, Phu Nhuan District, teachers of the kindergarten class (5-6 years old) develop a plan to implement the development standards for 5-year-old children in one school year. Each month, teachers will send parents a standard assessment form for their children, through which teachers and parents can evaluate their children's progress. For skills that children have not achieved, teachers will adjust and take note to further guide the children, and will also send some exercises and video clips (such as the skill of children focusing on listening to the teacher; children knowing how to complete assigned tasks; children sitting upright when studying...) for parents to interact with their children, helping them practice at home.

The Preschool Education Department, Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training also emphasized that in order to effectively prepare children for first grade, teachers need to work together, both educating children and combining propaganda with parents. For example, parents need to put their children to bed early to help increase their height and feel comfortable when going to class. Parents can show their children pictures of elementary school activities: classroom environment, learning atmosphere, rewards and commendations, flag-raising scenes, sitting postures, etc. Or parents can take their children on a tour of elementary schools, etc.

Not taught before grade 1 program

Recently, the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City continued to reiterate the requirement that all kindergartens are not allowed to teach the first grade program in advance in any form, strictly complying with the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training.

The Ministry of Education and Training also affirmed that "Teaching before grade 1 is unscientific". The Ministry of Education and Training has issued documents such as Circular No. 17 regulating extra teaching and learning; Directive No. 2325/CT-BGDDT on rectifying the situation of teaching before grade 1 curriculum of the Minister of Education and Training, which clearly states the requirements for the Department of Education and Training and units under the Ministry.

Every year, the Ministry of Education and Training and local Departments of Education and Training emphasize the above message, but in reality, many parents still send their 5-6 year old children to extra classes, before grade 1, so that their children can read and write fluently before entering grade 1.

Regarding this issue, Ms. Le Cam Linh affirmed: "Children should not be taught before grade 1. Preschool children do not need to read and write fluently. Because when children enter grade 1, they will feel bored because they already know everything, do not make an effort, do not need to concentrate to listen to the teacher, gradually these important skills will be lost, children will find it difficult in the later stages - for new knowledge that they do not know. The preschool education program has met the requirements of knowledge, skills and prepared the children to be ready to go to grade 1".
