Economic value of more than 7,000 billion VND

Located in the North of the Capital, Me Linh district is considered the largest flower and ornamental plant growing capital of Hanoi. On average, each season, the flower garden here supplies the market with millions of flowers, with many varieties such as: roses, chrysanthemums, lilies, gerberas and tens of thousands of ornamental plants.

Along with Me Linh district, 4 other districts including Bac Tu Liem, Dan Phuong, Tay Ho, Thuong Tin are also major flower growing areas of Hanoi. The 5 districts mentioned above alone account for nearly 70% of the total flower and ornamental plant growing area of the whole city.

The flower and ornamental plant industry brings in more than 7,000 billion VND in value each year.
The flower and ornamental plant industry brings in more than 7,000 billion VND in value each year.

Head of the Hanoi Rural Development Department Nguyen Van Chi said that according to statistics, the city currently has more than 8,000 hectares of flowers and ornamental plants of all kinds, mainly concentrated in suburban areas. The value of flowers and ornamental plants in recent years has reached more than 7,000 billion VND.

“With new advances in varieties, fertilization processes, mineral nutrition systems, automatic irrigation, light and temperature regulation, the productivity of flowers and ornamental plants is now quite high. The average production value reaches 0.5 - 1.5 billion VND/ha/year; many models reach 2.2 billion VND/ha/year…” - Mr. Nguyen Van Chi shared.

Bringing great economic value, however, the flower and ornamental plant growing industry has not been without difficulties and limitations. One of the issues that need to be concerned about today is that Hanoi still has few large-scale high-tech flower growing models of 20 hectares or more.

Continue to expand flower and ornamental plant areas

According to the Hanoi Department of Rural Development, up to now, the city has formed 47 concentrated flower and ornamental plant production areas with a total area of more than 1,800 hectares and an average scale of 10 - 20 hectares/area.

Areas specializing in growing flowers and ornamental plants are mainly concentrated in districts: Bac Tu Liem, Tay Ho, Me Linh, Dan Phuong, Thuong Tin, Gia Lam... Of which, the area for growing high-quality flowers accounts for more than 30% and is continuing to expand.

Director of Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Xuan Dai said that the city has identified flowers and ornamental plants as a key economic sector. Therefore, the project on developing flower and ornamental plant production has recently been issued, with the goal of expanding the area of flower and ornamental plant cultivation from 60 to 80 hectares per year.

The representative of the Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Rural Development added that with the newly issued project, the city strives to maintain the growth rate of ornamental plant production value from now to 2030 at an average of 10%/year. The value of flower and ornamental plant production in 2025 will reach about 10,000 billion VND, and by 2030 it will reach 15,000 - 20,000 billion VND.

In the coming time, based on the tasks assigned by the City People's Committee, the Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Rural Development will actively coordinate with departments, branches and localities to focus on synchronous and effective implementation of solutions. The agricultural sector expects the project to continue to strongly shift the crop structure, aiming to increase income for producers and improve the cultural and spiritual life of the people of the capital.

“The development of the flower and ornamental plant industry will contribute to preserving traditional landscapes, green vegetation, historical relic sites, and creating green spaces in the urban space of the capital…” - Director of the Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Xuan Dai .
