'Reunited' after nearly 70 years of separation

On the morning of December 1, 28 new communes, wards and towns in Hai Duong will officially come into operation. In this merger, 57 commune-level administrative units in Hai Duong will be reorganized, 27 communes and 1 ward will no longer exist, 28 new communes, wards and towns will be established.

Officials and people are excited and looking forward to the launch of the new commune. The joy is even more special for localities that are reunited after many years of separation, returning to their beloved old commune names.

Nam Sach district will soon have a new Tran Phu commune after merging two communes Nam Trung and Nam Chinh. The new commune has an old name, so for those who were born and raised here, the name Tran Phu commune is very familiar.

We visited the house of Mr. Nguyen Van Le, born in 1937 in Man De village, Nam Trung commune, a 60-year Party member. Born and raised in Nam Trung, Mr. Le was very happy to soon return to his old commune name, Tran Phu.

Flipping through the book History of the Party and People of Nam Trung Commune, Mr. Le told about the time when the two communes were still Tran Phu and then separated. In early 1951, the French set up posts and established militia in most of the villages along Highway 17 from Nam Sach town to Nam Hung commune.

Faced with that situation, to concentrate forces and unify leadership, Nam Sach District Party Committee decided to merge Minh Duc, Van Xuan, and Kim Bich communes into one commune, named Tran Phu in January 1951. In June 1956, Tran Phu commune was split into the current two communes of Nam Trung and Nam Chinh.

At that time, Mr. Le was only 14 years old, growing up in the same commune named Tran Phu. Now, at the age of nearly 90, he has returned to his old hometown.

"We are very excited to be merged with Nam Chinh commune, especially agreeing with the choice of the old name Tran Phu for the new commune. We are even happier when Nam Trung and Nam Chinh are in one commune, one house, where I was once an exemplary party member who was honored to welcome Uncle Ho to visit," Mr. Le shared.

Mr. Le's joy is also the joy of officials and people of many communes, wards and towns in Hai Duong during the days of preparing for the merger, especially in places with such special historical and cultural factors.

Witnessed many name changes

In a small house in lane 75 Le Thanh Nghi street (Hai Duong city), Mr. Chu Ba Chiem, the Party cell secretary and cultural and social officials of the ward reviewed the times when the ward, commune, village and area changed their names.

In that house, Mr. Chiem was born and raised, witnessing many name changes, separations, and mergers of zone 9, Pham Ngu Lao ward.

He remembers that this place used to be Bao Sai village, then Binh Minh hamlet, Binh Han commune, then Ward 1... It was not until 1981 that it became Pham Ngu Lao ward. After reviewing about ten name changes, Mr. Chiem was excited about this merger.

"Pham Ngu Lao Ward has a small area and population. Now, when merged into a new ward, it will be larger and more favorable for development. From Bao Sai village, which used to have only 50 houses, to today, when merged, it will be more than 2 square kilometers with nearly 27,000 people. Especially, it is a ward with Thong Nhat Square and a walking street of Hai Duong City," Mr. Chiem said excitedly.

Although he felt a bit regretful about the old name of Pham Ngu Lao ward, Mr. Chiem and many others found it meaningful and honorable that their ward was given a new name, the name of the late Vice President Le Thanh Nghi.

In Gia Tan commune (Gia Loc), many people are discussing together at the tea shop at the beginning of the commune about the day of joining Gia Khanh commune to become Gia Phuc commune.

Mr. Pham Dinh Hau in Phuc Tan village was excited because the new commune name has the word "Phuc". Mr. Hau joked: "Now, wherever I go, if people ask me where I'm from, I can proudly say that I'm from Gia Phuc commune, Gia Loc district. Just hearing that makes me feel the spirit, the blessings, the fortune, and it's also the hometown of the late Deputy Prime Minister Le Thanh Nghi."

These days, in the headquarters of communes, wards and towns implementing the merger, one can see the bustling and urgent atmosphere. The last activities in the old communes are organized as a word of gratitude and farewell.

The trucks carrying documents and furniture to move the headquarters were busier. The atmosphere of preparing rooms, saying goodbye, and getting acquainted was also lively. Retired officials were also excited because they had completed their tasks well.

The day of merger has come, the cadres and people of Hai Duong all share the same belief in the future of the new commune, ward and town.
