Cole Palmer and Chelsea have been inconsistent this season. |
In July 2024, Palmer signed a new contract with Chelsea until 2033, a nine-year commitment - a rare commitment in modern football. Former Liverpool centre-back Jamie Carragher believes this could be a decision the England player will regret.
On The Overlap , former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes also said that Palmer seemed unhappy at Chelsea. “I have felt for a long time that with Cole Palmer, everything seemed too easy when playing for Chelsea. He knew he was going to play every week and be the best player. I think he needed to be challenged more, but I don’t see Chelsea having a strong desire to win any trophies,” Scholes analyzed.
Carragher added from experience when he commented on Brighton's game against Chelsea a month ago: "I'm a big fan of Cole Palmer. He made two great passes early on, but as the game went on you could see his frustration with his team-mates."
“It reminds me of Steven Gerrard at Liverpool – superior to everyone but constantly disappointed. Gerrard was a local so he never left, Palmer is different,” Carragher assessed.
Palmer, a £45m signing from Manchester City in the summer of 2023, has quickly become the soul of Chelsea's team, which has spent more than £1bn on transfers in the past two years. In his first season, he was named Young Player of the Year by both the Premier League and the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA).
However, the 2024/25 season was a different story. Palmer went 10 consecutive games without a goal, and according to Carragher and Scholes, the first signs of frustration were starting to show.
“I go back to the issue of eight or nine-year contracts. Are they really good for the club and the player? For Palmer, who has six or seven years left on his contract, he deserves to play for a team that is aiming to win the Champions League . So how can Cole get out?” Carragher asked.
Scholes and Carragher both agree that Palmer does not have the same deep emotional attachment to Chelsea as Gerrard does to Liverpool, making the possibility of the midfielder looking to leave in the future entirely possible, especially if the team fails to meet their ambitions of competing in the Champions League or Premier League.
