People go to dig for clams (brackish water clams), a specialty of Tam Giang lagoon in Con Toc area (Quang Loi commune, Quang Dien district, Thua Thien Hue province).
Fishermen from Ngu My Thanh fishing village (Quang Loi commune, Quang Dien district) return home early tomorrow morning after a night of hard fishing on Tam Giang lagoon. Before that, the shrimp and fish that the people caught were sold to traders right at Tam Giang floating market.
Over the years, the abundant aquatic resources of Tam Giang - Cau Hai lagoon have created sustainable livelihoods for more than 400,000 residents in 33 communes along the lagoon and coastal areas of Thua Thien Hue province.
Here, there are also hundreds of species of benthic organisms, the most notable of which are shrimp, crab, oyster, clam, mussel, scallop...

According to Mr. Tran He (62 years old, in Ngu My Thanh village, Quang Loi commune), most fishermen here will work all night on the lagoon, and at dawn the next day bring their catch to the floating market area for trading.
“During the season when there are many large shrimp and fish, each night we go out like this, my wife and I earn 400,000-500,000 VND, some people earn more,” Mr. He shared.

Mr. Phan Dang Bao, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Quang Loi Commune, Quang Dien District, said that most of the people in Ngu My Thanh, Ha Cong, and Cu Lai villages in the commune live by fishing.

Tam Giang floating market operates from 4:30 a.m. to about 6 a.m. every day.
According to Mr. Bao, the entire Quang Loi commune currently has about 210 motorboats over 15CV and 280 boats from 5CV, specializing in fishing and exploiting resources on Tam Giang lagoon, creating a stable livelihood.

Trading activities take place at Tam Giang floating market in Ngu My Thanh fishing village, Quang Loi commune, Quang Dien district, Thua Thien Hue province.

Special shrimp and fish species of Tam Giang lagoon are exploited by fishermen.
Fishing activities are also bustling in Cau Hai lagoon, Phu Loc district. In the photo, Phu Loc fishermen take the opportunity to have dinner on their boat while going to the fishing grounds.

According to the fisheries sector of Thua Thien Hue province, due to the prescribed conditions, most of the occupations have quite simple exploitation methods on the lagoon, with rudimentary means, mainly wooden or aluminum boats, equipped with engines with a capacity of 15 CV or less. Currently, there are more than 5,000 vehicles searching for aquatic resources on the lagoon day and night.

Exploitation activities on Tam Giang - Cau Hai lagoon can be divided into two main groups, including fixed exploitation and mobile exploitation.
Fixed fishing has popular forms such as trap, bottom, rig, chuom, and running net, in which trap leads in quantity and distribution on routes.

Mobile fishing is divided into two types: fishing based on the principle of netting fish and filtering water to catch fish.
According to a fisherman in Trung Chanh village (Loc Dien commune, Phu Loc district), fishing with a flute is one of the traditional occupations of lagoon fishermen, using the V-shaped trap principle to put fish into the trap and prevent them from escaping.

Before 1985, both bamboo flutes and traps were woven from bamboo. After the 1985 storm No. 8 (Typhoon Cecil), most of the bamboo flutes were damaged and lost. At the same time, new synthetic nets appeared on the market with the advantages of being cheap, durable and easy to transport, so they were favored by fishermen.
While in Ngu My Thanh area, people collect nets to bring fish to sell early in the morning, trading activities in Cau Hai lagoon area often take place at night, mostly concentrated at Doi 30 wholesale market (Trung Chanh village, Loc Dien commune, Phu Loc district).

Previously, Hill 30 market operated from about 11:30 pm the night before to about 1 am the next day, now it takes place from 0-2:30 am every day.
According to the leader of the People's Committee of Loc Dien commune (Phu Loc district, Thua Thien Hue province), the Doi 30 seafood market is not only a trading place for people in the commune but also for those who work in seafood exploitation in the neighboring areas. People who come to Doi 30 market to buy fish also come from all over the country. Every night, more than 30 refrigerated trucks come to load and unload goods, carrying dozens of tons of fish, shrimp, and crab to sell in Thua Thien Hue province, even to other provinces and cities.
The Tam Giang - Cau Hai lagoon system stretches from Phong Dien district to Phu Loc (Thua Thien Hue), with an area of over 22,000 hectares of water surface, divided into different lagoons, such as: Thuan An, Con Trai, An Truyen, Thanh Lam, Ha Trung, Thuy Tu and Cau Hai.
The lagoon system has both salt, brackish and fresh water.
Geographically, Tam Giang - Cau Hai can be divided into 3 systems. Tam Giang lagoon stretches from O Lau river mouth to Thuan An river mouth with a length of 25km, water surface area of about 52km2. Thuy Tu lagoon stretches from Thuan An bridge to Con Trai over a length of 33km, water surface area of about 60km2. Cau Hai lagoon has a basin shape, stretching from Con Trai to Hoi Rui river and from Truoi river mouth to Vinh Phong mountain, water surface area of about 104km2.
According to a survey by the fisheries sector, the Tam Giang – Cau Hai lagoon has up to 921 species of flora and fauna, including 230 species of fish and shrimp. In this lagoon system, there are many aquatic species considered endemic, rare and valuable with high commercial value such as red snapper, grouper, mullet, brown, and mullet.
