Switching from ineffective shrimp farming to crab farming, farmer Nguyen Van Nhan earned hundreds of millions in profit in the first crop.
Mr. Nguyen Van Nhan (Hamlet 3B, Quynh Loc Commune, Hoang Mai Town) was contracted 1.5 hectares of shrimp pond. In recent years, shrimp have been infected with diseases, productivity has decreased, income has been unstable, and at times, the pond has been abandoned. Starting from August 2024, with support from agricultural extension sources, he boldly registered to participate in the model "Raising sea crabs with industrial feed in ineffective shrimp farming areas".

With a pond scale of 3,000m2 and 6,000 crabs, the total cost is nearly 196 million VND, of which the State supports more than 105 million VND, including crabs and food. Photo: TP
With many years of experience in seafood farming, he said that crabs are relatively difficult to raise, requiring technical knowledge and close monitoring of the pond. On average, the water is changed every 4 days, and an aerator is regularly used to create ventilation and change the water source. Photo: TP
When he first released the crabs, Mr. Nhan used dry bamboo pipes, sawed through one end, about 30cm long, submerged them at the bottom of the pond and around the pond created a cage for the crabs to live in, avoiding insect attacks. Photo: TP
Around the pond, there should be a small mesh net to prevent crabs from crawling out, causing loss. Photo: TP
In addition to biological products, he also uses cheap fish and anchovies to mix crab food, helping the crabs grow faster, making the crab meat tastier and reducing farming costs. Photo: TP
In the first crop, the survival rate of crabs was over 55%, the output was 8.5 quintals, the revenue was 350 million VND, after deducting expenses, the profit was over 100 million VND. Photo: TP
From the model of commercial crab farming with high economic efficiency, stability, and lower costs than white-leg shrimp farming, Mr. Nhan plans to expand the area to 1,000m2 in the near future. Photo: TP
