People in the upper Can Giuoc district, Long An have the advantage of growing vegetables. In recent years, a household has been growing aromatic squash, bringing in high income, as an additional direction for gardeners in this area.
"Success in growing squash creates a huge source of income for my family. Not only do I cultivate it myself, I also guide many households in communes to expand this variety to areas with great potential.
"Now we can see that the family has gone in the right direction when investing," garden owner Phan Hung Phong, 47 years old, living in Phu Thanh, Phuoc Ly commune, Can Giuoc district, Long An told me.

Mr. Phan Hung Phong is recognized by many local people as a quick-witted farmer who exploits the potential and advantages of the soil in the upper region of Can Giuoc district, Long An.
The 4,000 square meter plot of land used for growing perennial mango trees was determined to be no longer effective, so in 2022, Mr. Phong decided to switch to growing squash.
Determined to do it, the garden owner started renting a machine to dig a pond, make beds and plant squash.
After 2 years of applying the closed model, Mr. Phong's success exceeded expectations, with annual profits many times higher than growing mangoes.
According to Mr. Phong, squash is quite easy to grow, requires little care, and the time from planting to harvest is about 50 days. Each harvest lasts continuously for more than 2 months. Especially, the output is stable. Each year, the garden owner grows 2 squash crops, with a yield of about 5 tons/1,000 square meters.

Only calculating the average selling price of 8,000 VND/kg, minus expenses such as: land improvement, film, net, fertilizer, pesticides, labor... gives an average net profit of 700 million VND/year.

In addition, Mr. Phong is applying the model of growing squash in the direction of organic production.
Accordingly, he mainly uses organic fertilizers, sprays biological pesticides to prevent and treat diseases, ensuring the provision of clean, safe products for consumers' health.
Mr. Phong also invested in an automatic spraying system to save time and labor, helping plants grow strongly and achieve high productivity due to the ability to provide timely water, sufficient water, and regular fertilizer at the right time of plant growth.
Thanks to this production direction, his products are almost contracted by warehouse owners of wholesale markets in Ho Chi Minh City to be purchased at stable prices, higher than the market price.
In addition, he also intercrops with other crops such as squash, winged beans, and eggplant. At the same time, Mr. Phong also digs ponds to raise snakehead fish, catfish, and giant catfish to help increase his family's income.
According to Mr. Phong, the model of growing squash is not a new farming model, but if farmers invest properly, it will bring quite high economic efficiency, contributing to reducing difficulties when some crops and livestock prices fall.
This model promises to bring in a significant source of income, helping farmers increase their income and become rich.
Mr. Phan Hong Phong has been a good farmer at the provincial, district and commune levels for many years.
The owner of the squash garden also gives instructions on how to prepare extremely delicious squash: To prevent the squash from turning black when stir-frying, prepare a bowl of water, add a little salt to dissolve it, then soak the squash for 5 minutes. This step is extremely important to help prevent the squash from turning black.
"After soaking the squash in diluted salt water for about 5 minutes, pour out all the water in the bowl and then rinse the squash under the tap. Surely no matter what you stir-fry, cook or make, the squash will not turn black," Mr. Phong shared.
