The singer-songwriter has continued her "record" streak of Oscar losses in the Best Original Song category. This means she has lost eight times in a row (since 2017), and has also lost eight times non-consecutive, bringing her total number of missed awards to 16 since her first nomination in 1987.
Dianne Warren appears at the Oscars
This year she was honored for her song The Journey from Tyler Perry's Netflix film The Six Triple Eight, about the all-black, female 6,888th Battalion during World War II, and performed by Grammy-winning singer-songwriter HER.
She lost to the song El Mal from the film Emilia Perez, performed by the composer duo Clément Ducol and singer-songwriter Camille. This was a surprise because previously at the awards presented by the Society of Composers and Lyricists, El Mal lost the award for Best Song for a Comedy/Musical to Compress/Repress from the film Challengers (which was not nominated at the Oscars). Meanwhile, in the drama/documentary category, Warren was the one named.
In terms of records, Warren is still the female musician with the most Oscar nominations, surpassing the late Marilyn Bergman's 15. However, she is not the one with the most failures, as Greg P Russell - the sound engineer who directed works such as Skyfall, Armageddon and the first 3 Transformers films - has this "honor".
Warren, accordingly, was awarded an honorary Oscar at the 2022 Governors Awards. This achievement added to her list of Grammy, Emmy, Golden Globe, Ivor Novello and Billboard Music awards.
In pop music, she has written nine US number-one hits and 33 top 10 hits. These include Cher's 1989 hit If I Could Turn Back Time, Céline Dion's Because You Loved Me (1996), LeAnn Rimes's How Do I Live a year later, and Aerosmith's 1998 hit I Don't Want to Miss a Thing.
