Binh Phuoc agriculture changes

Farmer's mindset

Farmer Lau Sy Nip has been involved in farming for nearly 40 years in village 5, Long Binh commune, Phu Rieng district. More than 10 years ago, he cut down an entire cashew and coffee farm with a total area of 30 hectares to plant longan. After 5 years, when the trees bore fruit, he realized that he had planted the wrong variety, so once again he had to "bite the bullet" and cut down the longan trees to switch to growing grapefruit and durian. Not stopping there, he rented land to grow more rosewood, bougainvillea, coconut, dates, longan, and durian with a total area of nearly 50 hectares. From inorganic farming, he switched to organic farming, from monoculture to polyculture to adapt to the market and climate change. His multi-storey, multi-canopy fruit garden is gradually shifting to an agricultural economic model serving tourists who love the garden. That is also a way for him to promote the brand of his fruit garden.

Farmers in the province are gradually applying mechanization in agricultural production to reduce costs and improve the quality of agricultural products.

30 years is the time that farmer Nguyen Van Hung in village 6, Phuoc Son commune, Bu Dang district has been attached to durian trees. In addition to his family's 15 hectares of durian, he also rented an additional 50 hectares of durian for agricultural economics. Along with manure, Mr. Hung also bought tons of chicken eggs to mix with EM products to make microbial fertilizer for the garden. Thanks to this method, 5 years ago, his family's garden achieved GlobalGAP certification. In 2022, when the protocol for exporting durian officially to the Chinese market took effect, his family's durian garden was specially granted the first growing area code in Binh Phuoc province. For him, organic farming will help farmers have 3 benefits in the production process as well as product consumption. “The immediate benefit of organic farming is that durian trees are not infected with nematodes that cause stem rot and sap oozing. The second benefit is that workers are not exposed to chemicals during the farming process. And finally, consumers have clean, safe products to use,” Mr. Hung confided.

Farmers in Bu Dang district apply digital transformation in durian cultivation

Taking advantage of the climate and soil of Binh Phuoc, young farmer Tran Van Quyet in village 3, Thong Nhat commune, Bu Dang district has invested in planting 20 hectares of Blacthon durian. However, he only needs 3 hours of care. From fertilizing, watering, spraying pesticides, all are done through a water-saving irrigation technology system. Each row of durian in the farm is numbered to manage the situation of pests and diseases as well as the output quality of agricultural products. "Investing in technology application not only helps farmers save maximum labor but also gradually modernize agricultural production" - Mr. Quyet said.

Mr. Huynh Long Hai in Hamlet K54, Loc Thien Commune, Loc Ninh District has been growing pepper for more than 30 years. Last season, his family's pepper garden of more than 1 hectare yielded nearly 2 tons. Over the past 5 years, the pepper garden has always met organic standards. Thanks to that, his family's pepper was purchased by the company for 193,000 VND/kg, while the market price was only 150,000 VND/kg. This result was achieved thanks to the breeding process and the application of IMO products in pepper cultivation. This is a process that Loc Ninh District will implement in 2024 to help people convert agricultural cultivation methods from inorganic to organic, from chemical to biological to move towards a green, circular and sustainable agriculture according to the agricultural restructuring project.

In recent times, cooperatives and people have applied biological solutions to prevent pests and diseases, thereby reducing environmental pollution from fertilizers and chemical pesticides. This is one of the components of organic agriculture. It creates safe products for consumers and increases economic efficiency in agricultural production.

Mark of 2024

In 2024, Binh Phuoc's agricultural sector has implemented a series of programs and projects to gradually realize the targets of the Resolution of the 11th Provincial Party Congress. Especially the digital transformation programs and projects in the field of high-tech agriculture towards restructuring the agricultural sector. To date, the whole province has more than 14,000 hectares of crop area cared for according to clean, organic and biological standards. The whole province currently has 77 growing area codes with a total area of more than 4,500 hectares serving the export market.

With a growing area code and a packing facility code, Binh Phuoc durian is highly appreciated in complying with the criteria of importing countries.

In the livestock sector, the whole industry continues to promote industrial, safe, value-chain livestock farming, gradually reducing small-scale livestock farming; building disease-safe facilities, areas, and livestock farming chains. The province's total herd of large livestock is currently over 52,000. Pig farming continues to develop with a total herd of over 2 million distributed in 421 farms, of which the closed, cold farm system accounts for nearly 70%... Thanks to industrial, disease-safe livestock farming associated with chain linkage, the production value of the livestock industry has contributed to increasing the province's agricultural, forestry and fishery production value in 2024 by 5.5%, continuing to lead the Southeast region.

Binh Phuoc continues to be the center of cashew production, processing and export of the whole country.

In 2024, the agricultural sector, together with local authorities at all levels, has accelerated the implementation of the agricultural restructuring project for the 2021-2025 period, with a vision to 2030, helping the area of crops and livestock in the province develop in accordance with the plan. The participation of technical staff from the whole sector from the province to the district has helped people raise awareness in the digital transformation of agriculture, thereby promoting the transformation of the growth model in depth, improving productivity, quality, efficiency and competitiveness of agricultural products.

People are strongly shifting from production thinking to economic thinking, from individual to collective production models associated with 210 cooperatives and 111 effective cooperative groups. From the source of raw materials for crops and livestock, enterprises, cooperatives, cooperative groups and individual business households have built 141 OCOP products from 3-5 stars. The whole province has 79 communes reaching the new rural finish line. By the end of 2024, Loc Ninh, Bu Dop, Dong Phu, Phu Rieng districts and Chon Thanh town will complete the procedures and criteria to reach the new rural district standard. This is also the premise and motivation for the agricultural sector to set goals and solutions for 2025 with many optimistic signals.

In 2025, the agricultural sector aims to increase agricultural production value by 5.2% compared to 2024. The rate of rural households using clean water will reach 100%. 100% of communes will meet new rural standards and 1 more district-level unit will be recognized as new rural.

2025 is the final year to implement the Resolution of the 11th Binh Phuoc Provincial Party Congress with the general goal for the entire period of 2020-2025 being: "Developing high-tech agriculture, organic agriculture, international integration, adaptation to climate change, increasing added value and sustainable development associated with building new rural areas, wealthy farmers, civilized and modern rural areas". Based on the achievements of 2024, Binh Phuoc's agricultural sector is proud and confident that it will achieve the goals of the Resolution of the Provincial Party Congress in the field of agriculture and rural areas.
