Right after the Lunar New Year, the winter corn crop on fertile land in Tuong Son commune also began to enter the final harvest. Meeting Mrs. Thai Thi Dung in hamlet 1 who had just picked corn ears in the field, packaged them to send to customers who had placed orders in advance, Mrs. Dung said, "Next year's corn crop, I will expand the winter corn growing area, because the efficiency is many times higher than growing rice."
This winter corn crop, Ms. Dung planted 1 hectare of sticky corn on land "borrowed" from some households in Hamlet 7. With the characteristic of sticky and fragrant sticky corn, which is very popular with consumers, households in Tuong Son commune often bring corn to retail to customers along the way, or import it to small traders and local food service establishments. Like Ms. Dung's household, Mr. Tran Van Binh's household also planted 1 hectare of sticky corn. During the main harvest days, Mr. Binh mobilized his whole family to go to the field to pick corn, pack it and send it to customers who ordered it.
Households in hamlets 1 and 7 said that fresh sticky corn is sold at wholesale prices based on the number of ears, averaging 1.5 - 2 thousand VND/ear. If sold retail by boiling the corn, the price can double. With 1 sao of corn, the investment capital is about 1 million VND, including seeds and fertilizers, and the income is from 4 - 5 million VND. With 1 hectare of sticky corn, starting to plant in July, after about 3 months it will be harvested continuously for 2-3 months, giving a total income from 1 hectare of sticky corn of about 40 - 50 million VND.
Mr. Nguyen Tai Quy - Chairman of Tuong Son Commune People's Committee said that the whole commune has 150 hectares of winter corn on two-rice land, including 80 hectares of waxy corn. In recent years, thanks to the conversion of crop structure and selection of suitable varieties, farmers have increased their harvest on the existing land area. In particular, winter corn is showing quite high efficiency, especially in 2023, when people expanded the market for waxy corn to the southern provinces, so the amount of corn produced is not enough to meet market demand.
It is known that on the occasion of Tet, understanding the transportation companies with fixed-route vehicles passing through Tuong Son to provinces such as Hue and Da Nang, glutinous corn growers in Tuong Son connected with customers in Hue and Da Nang to sell local glutinous corn. And this winter crop, dozens of bags of fresh corn were ordered by customers in the South every day. People just had to pack the corn, consign it to the shipping company for home delivery, so the amount of fresh glutinous corn harvested was sold out immediately.
“There were peak days when people sent 60-100 bags of corn to the South, and people were very excited. The local government highly appreciated the quickness of the people, and will continue to support and direct people to maximize the efficiency of crops in the fields, including corn and sugarcane, which are the main crops with high economic efficiency,” said Mr. Quy.
