Restoring the 'health' of agricultural land in Nam Tan (Nam Sach)

Nam Tan Commune (Nam Sach, Hai Duong) has a good way to restore and balance nutrients in agricultural soil, creating bumper crops.

Garlic productivity in Nam Tan commune in recent winter crops has continuously increased due to soil restoration and nutrient regeneration.

High productivity

We arrived in Nam Tan commune when people were concentrating on harvesting the remaining winter garlic crop. Although it was the end of the season, the garlic plants were still quite green, with strong roots, blooming clumps, large bulbs, and better appearance than last year.

Holding heavy bunches of fresh garlic in his hands, Mr. Tran Dinh Tuong, Director of the Agricultural Service Cooperative of Nam Tan Commune happily said that the fresh garlic yield in the winter crop of 2024 in the whole commune reached an average of 1 ton/sao, an increase of about 15% compared to the same period in 2023. Previously, people also had a good onion crop, with an average yield of 800 kg/sao, also an increase of about 15%.

"Onion and garlic productivity has increased steadily in the past two years. There are many reasons for this achievement, but the main reason is that the soil has become healthy again," Mr. Tuong informed.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Nguyet was pulling garlic in the field and said: "Mr. Tuong is being modest, I think the yield of onions and garlic this season must increase by more than 15%. According to Ms. Nguyet, in the previous seasons, due to poor soil, the family's onions and garlic plants had large and small clumps, uneven bulbs, and the yield was only 2/3 of the last winter crop. Since increasing organic fertilizers and biological products to help the soil recover, increase resistance to pests and diseases, onions and garlic bulbs have grown evenly, are large, and have bright appearance. Moreover, the onions and garlic produced also feel safer because they do not have to spray as many pesticides as before.

Another farmer standing nearby chimed in, saying: "Not only onions and garlic, but also rice and other vegetables have higher yields than a few years ago. The soil is healthy, so everything seems to be favorable for cultivation."

Rice roots in areas using biological products grow faster and tiller stronger than areas not using this product.

We visited some winter-spring rice fields in Nam Tan commune that were in the tillering stage. Almost all the rice fields were green, with large clumps, strong plants and few pests. Pulling up a clump of rice in her family's 3-acre field to check, Ms. Vu Thi Lich in Quang Tan village informed: "The rice roots are growing very well, the plants are healthy, and have few pests. Since the beginning of the season, my family has only had to spray thrips insecticide twice, half the amount compared to before. Since applying biological products, I have seen the land recover and become healthier."

For rice, farmers in Nam Tan commune have only used organic fertilizers and microbial products in the production process since the winter-spring crop of 2024. At that time, the whole commune had about 7 hectares using these fertilizers and products. As a result, the rice plants grew well, pests and diseases were reduced, and the yield reached 68 quintals/ha, much higher than fields cultivated using traditional methods. People saw the effectiveness and have actively applied it since then.

Nam Tan commune has about 220 hectares of agricultural land, of which 40 hectares specialize in vegetable cultivation. Mr. Tuong said that in previous years, rice and vegetable production had some ineffective stages. In the 2023 crop, about 3-4 hectares of rice in Long Dong village were affected by yellow dwarf disease, black-striped dwarf disease...

Many vegetable areas in the commune have died or are underdeveloped, with reduced productivity due to diseases such as root rot, root rot, fungi, yellow leaves, etc. Spraying chemicals not only fails to kill disease-causing fungi, but also increasingly kills beneficial microorganisms in the soil. A large amount of residual pesticides causes organic and chemical poisoning in the soil. The poor ability of the soil to transform nutrients causes diseases in rice, vegetables, etc.

The "health" of the soil in Nam Tan commune has been improved, helping rice and crops grow well, increasing productivity and quality, and moving towards green agriculture.

In the winter-spring crop of 2023 - 2024, the Nam Tan Commune Agricultural Service Cooperative coordinated for the first time to test a safe production model using organic fertilizers and biological products on 1 hectare of onions. The model showed clear results. By the winter-spring crop of 2024 - 2025, the whole commune had 50 hectares of onions and garlic using organic fertilizers and biological products. "From the success on onions and garlic, we continued to encourage farmers to apply this method on rice and some other vegetables and all brought encouraging results," said Mr. Tuong.

Biological products contain microorganisms that can fix nitrogen, decompose insoluble phosphates, and dissolve potassium, helping to provide nutrients, improve fertility, and increase soil moisture retention. The soil becomes loose, airy, rich in humus, and easily soluble, creating favorable conditions for plant roots to develop. Expanding the application of biological products in production is a strategic transition, helping to improve soil health, reduce pests and diseases, increase productivity, and move towards green agriculture in Nam Tan commune.

The land here is now not only restored in nutrition but also healthy, helping crops grow stably, with fewer pests and diseases, and increasing productivity and quality.

According to calculations by Nam Tan Agricultural Service Cooperative, soil improvement with organic fertilizers and biological products helps reduce input costs by 15-30%, increasing crop productivity by 5-10%. The quality of agricultural products is increasingly improved, contributing to ensuring the health of consumers.
