When it comes to Quynh Thang, in addition to growing citrus, pineapple, sugarcane, and vetiver, there is also a type of livestock that is well-known, which is wild boar. Taking advantage of the natural conditions of the mountains and abundant food, in recent years, local people have invested heavily in developing wild boar farming, contributing to increasing their income.
We visited the wild boar farm of Mr. Le Van Phuong (born in 1979) in village 2, Quynh Thang commune. On an area of 1 hectare, he planned many breeding sites, each of which would have a separate barn, surrounded by a wall system. Depending on the age of the wild boar herd, Mr. Phuong would arrange them separately for easy care.

Sharing about the "fate" that led him to the wild boar farming profession, Mr. Phuong said that a few years ago he learned about wild boar farming because it is a specialty, the meat quality is delicious, and the price is much higher than domestic pigs. When he first formed the idea, he aimed to target customers using his products at restaurants and hotels in and outside the province.
After researching and learning from the experiences of farms in Hoa Binh and Tay Ninh provinces, Mr. Phuong returned home to build a farm and imported 27 wild boars from Thailand to raise. In the early days of starting his business, Mr. Phuong also encountered many difficulties due to lack of experience. While working and learning about safe farming processes, Mr. Phuong was able to create quality, clean, and delicious wild boar products. Gradually, Mr. Phuong's wild boar meat brand became known to many people, many people came to order products, and raising became more convenient. Seeing that Mr. Phuong's farm model was operating well and bringing high economic efficiency, many people in the village and commune came to buy breeding pigs to raise.
Mr. Phuong said that to have delicious meat, it is necessary to apply the semi-grazing method, the main food is elephant grass, corn bran and beer dregs, so the wild boar herd here is always favored by consumers. Currently, his farm has over 250 wild boars, of which about 150 are ready for slaughter (weight from 30 - 60 kg/head).

“Although there is still a month until Tet, customers everywhere have called to order about 1.5 tons of wild boar meat. In the coming days, the number of orders is expected to increase. Grasping the market demand, this year the family has increased the total herd, so it will meet the needs of customers during Tet and the early Spring festivals of Giap Thin,” said Mr. Phuong.
Not far away, Mr. Ho Khac Hiep's wild boar farm with a scale of 100 pigs is also being invested in and carefully cared for in time for sale during Tet. To ensure delicious meat quality, Mr. Hiep's family raises wild boars for 12 months before selling them. The food source is completely natural such as sugarcane stalks, corn, cassava, sweet potatoes and supplemented with beer lees and a little mineral salt.
“Currently, out of a total herd of 100 pigs, 50 pigs weigh between 30 and 40 kg, and are ready for sale during Tet with a selling price of 130,000 VND/kg at the barn. For wild boars that meet the standards for sale during Tet, at this time we limit the source of food that can easily cause obesity to avoid fat development and focus on lean meat,” Mr. Hiep added.
Wild boar farming in Quynh Luu first developed in Quynh Thang commune, then expanded to many other localities such as Quynh Tam, Tan Son, Quynh Chau, Tan Thang... According to statistics from the livestock industry of Quynh Luu district, the total herd of wild boars in the district is currently about more than 1,000, of which about more than 600 weigh from 30 - 50 kg/head. Developing a high-quality wild boar herd not only helps farmers have a significant additional source of income but also enriches livestock in the area.
