Growing more than 10,000 chrysanthemum plants of various kinds, Mr. Nguyen Van Thang (Thanh Linh commune, Thanh Chuong district) reserved most of them to sell during the Lunar New Year. He planted about 3,000 plants later to sell during the Full Moon Festival of January. However, during the recent Tet holiday, there were still quite a lot of chrysanthemums left in the garden, about 2,000 plants.

“Chrysanthemums are durable, and with good care and preservation, they remain fresh. After Tet, chrysanthemums are sold to people who go to temples, pagodas, and worship the God of Wealth. In particular, from January 12th to now, the number of customers buying flowers for the Full Moon Festival in January has been very high. Currently, the chrysanthemum garden of 5,000 plants has had wholesale customers placing orders and retail customers coming to choose and buy at the garden,” Mr. Thang said excitedly.

Growing chrysanthemums to sell during Tet, but due to a missed harvest, the chrysanthemum garden of Ms. Ngoc Son's family (Hoi Son commune, Anh Son district) only started to bloom on the 15th day of the first lunar month. Currently, her family is focusing on cutting branches and pulling them to sell to people for the 15th day worship.

“Nearly 3,000 chrysanthemums of various types: yellow cup chrysanthemums, large yellow chrysanthemums, white chrysanthemums, colored chrysanthemums... were in bud during Tet and are now blooming. Therefore, we opened a garden to sell full moon chrysanthemums. They are also easy to sell, people buy yellow chrysanthemums, white chrysanthemums to decorate their altars; many people buy colored chrysanthemums to decorate their family temples, to visit graves...”, Ms. Ngoc said.

After Tet, the weather was favorable, so chrysanthemums grew well, giving beautiful flowers right at the Full Moon, so they sold quite well with quite high prices. During the days from January 12-15, flower growers in the districts of Yen Thanh, Nghi Loc, Vinh City, Nam Dan, Hung Nguyen... were busy harvesting the last batch of chrysanthemums to supply the Full Moon market in January. Compared to Tet, the price of Full Moon flowers was 500 VND/branch lower, but for flower growers, this was quite a high price compared to previous years.

“Currently, we are selling chrysanthemums of all kinds in the garden at prices ranging from 25,000-35,000 VND/dozen (flowers, branches, roots). Although this price is not as high as during Tet, it is easy to sell. In addition to the area of flowers grown out of season to serve the Full Moon market, the remaining amount of Tet flowers has now been almost sold out,” said Ms. Nguyen Thi Thao, a chrysanthemum grower in Nghi An commune (Vinh city).

Currently, many flower growers in the province, instead of focusing only on the Lunar New Year market, have planted in different seasons (planting flowers 7-10 days after the Tet flower crop) to serve the post-Tet market. The price may not be as high as during Tet, but it is easier to sell, and compared to growing vegetables, it brings in higher income.

“As a traditional flower growing area with a large market and strong consumption, Vinh city and surrounding areas. Previously, we only focused on the Tet flower crop, while other localities that grow seasonal flowers also only focus on Tet, so the market is saturated, supply is greater than demand, so sales are sluggish, and prices are not high.

In recent years, people have calculated to plant seeds 7-10 days later than Tet to serve the market after Tet. The demand for going to temples, worshiping Khai Ha, worshiping the Full Moon of January is quite high while the market is small, so it is easier to consume, and the price is also stable," said Ms. Le Thi Hoai An - President of Nghi Lien Commune Farmers' Association.

The price is cheaper, picked and cut to sell right away, so fresh, colorful chrysanthemums are favored by consumers. Photo: TP

At this time, the local markets are flooded with all kinds of chrysanthemums, most of which are grown in the province. With the selling price only half that of chrysanthemums imported from Da Lat, the flowers are large, have many buds, are fresh and colorful, so they are very popular with consumers.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Lan Huong is choosing chrysanthemums for herself at Hung Dung market (Vinh city) and said: "This full moon coincides with the first ancestral worship ceremony of the year, so I bought 200 diamond chrysanthemums to plant in pots at the church, to visit graves, and 100 large chrysanthemum branches to place on altars in various places. The price of chrysanthemums is cheap and fresh, so I often choose to buy them instead of flowers imported from other places," Ms. Huong said./.
