The model of joint potato production in Dien An commune (Dien Chau) was implemented from 2021 with a trial planting area of 1ha. Photo: TP By the 2025 winter-spring crop, the area has increased to 20 hectares. Mr. Truong Van Thang - Director of Dien An Cooperative said: "This increase in area reflects the efficiency and economic potential of the linkage model. In the near future, the potato growing area will be expanded, attracting more households to participate." Photo: TP Participating in the linkage model, potato farmers are supported with technical advice such as new varieties, advanced farming methods, and the application of integrated pest management to increase potato productivity and quality. Photo: TP Many stages in potato production are mechanized to reduce labor and increase economic value. Photo: TP This year's potato crop is bountiful, farmers are excited to harvest. Photo: TP The appearance, quality and size of the potatoes are also more uniform. Photo: TP In particular, thanks to the correct application of technical processes, potatoes are guaranteed to have no pesticide residues, meeting the processing and consumption needs of people and businesses domestically as well as for export. Photo: TP After harvesting, all qualified potatoes are purchased by the associated company at a price of 8,000 VND/kg, 500 - 1,000 VND/kg higher than last year. Photo: TP Ms. Ho Thi Huong, Hamlet 1, Dien An Commune, excitedly said: “Compared to growing peanuts, corn, sesame, etc., growing potatoes gives 1.5 times more income on the same area. In particular, farmers only need to plant and take good care of them, while the cooperatives and businesses will take care of the input and output.” Photo: TP Currently, the demand for processed potatoes domestically and for export is quite high. On average, Vietnam consumes nearly 1 million tons of potatoes each year, of which a large amount of raw potatoes must be imported from China, Australia, and the Netherlands. Meanwhile, in Nghe An, the winter crop production area is up to tens of thousands of hectares, but the potato area is only about 300 hectares/year, the climate, soil, alluvial land, and coastal land are very suitable for growing potatoes. Therefore, the connection of "4 houses" to make potatoes a key crop needs attention. Photo: TP
