Advice for Nghe An tourism to change

In order for Nghe An tourism to transform strongly and become a spearhead economic sector of the province, there needs to be synchronous, specific solutions and close coordination among relevant parties.

Nghe An Newspaper recorded opinions from representatives of tourism service businesses and management agencies on this issue.

Nghe An possesses great tourism potential with beautiful beaches, rich traditional culture and diverse natural landscapes. However, the proportion of Nghe An tourism only accounts for 4% of the total product value in the area. This will be a big challenge to achieve the goal by 2030 of "tourism basically becoming the spearhead economic sector of the province, creating momentum to promote the development of other industries and fields; contributing 9-10% to the province's GRDP" as set out in the Resolution of the 19th Nghe An Provincial Party Congress for the 2020-2025 term. The main reason lies in the lack of large projects from strategic investors.

Therefore, to make tourism a spearhead economic sector, the province needs to develop specific mechanisms such as tax exemptions and reductions, prioritizing the granting of construction permits for high-end resorts, etc. At the same time, upgrading infrastructure must go hand in hand with developing accompanying services. For example, the walking street in Vinh City needs more shopping centers and night food courts to retain tourists.

In 2005, Nghe An hosted the National Tourism Year, but after 20 years, we are still just a stopover, unable to retain tourists, unable to create an impression like Hoi An or Hue. This is extremely regrettable, when the province has not been able to exploit and promote the value of its existing tourism potential. For example, Nghe An owns a rich treasure of spiritual cultural heritage with dozens of ancient temples, pagodas and festivals recognized as national heritage. However, spiritual tourism in the locality is still developing sporadically, lacking an overall strategy, not really a lever for developing the tourism industry in general.

I think that to exploit the tourism potential, the province needs to focus on building special thematic tours, combining visiting relics with experiencing festivals and using digital technology to introduce heritage to international visitors. If this is done well, spiritual tourism can completely become a cultural industry, contributing greatly to total tourism revenue.

Currently, Nghe An’s tourism products are not outstanding enough compared to neighboring provinces. The clear seasonality causes business activities to concentrate at certain times of the year, creating instability and difficulty in building diverse tourism products.

In addition, tourism human resources, especially international tour guides, are in serious shortage; hiring human resources from other provinces and cities is both costly and reduces competitiveness. In addition, although the Western Nghe An tourist destination is attractive, it faces many difficulties in attracting foreign visitors due to unfavorable administrative procedures.

Therefore, improving the quality of human resources, especially international tour guides, should be a top priority. Nghe An needs to strengthen specialized training, especially targeting important markets such as the UK, South Korea, and China. In addition, simplifying visa procedures should also be promoted to create more favorable conditions for international visitors to Nghe An.

"To develop tourism into a spearhead economic sector, the prerequisite is that Nghe An needs to attract large investors with strong financial potential to implement large projects and high-end services. Along with that, it is necessary to invest synchronously from airports, road systems, commercial centers, restaurants, hotels to entertainment areas. Only when there is a strong enough infrastructure, can Nghe An make the most of its inherent potential.

Only with a strong enough infrastructure can we fully exploit the available potential. At the same time, the province also needs to promote connections with regional destinations, design inter-regional tours such as cross-Vietnam tours or cross-border tours between Vietnam and Laos via the Nam Can International Border Gate, develop sports tourism and build a safe tourism brand to retain tourists longer.

Ms. Tran Thi My Hanh - Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism: "Committed to accompanying businesses from policy to action"

We are committed to accompanying tourism and service businesses with the ultimate goal of developing Nghe An tourism strongly. In the near future, the Department will develop a resolution on tourism development to submit to the Provincial People's Council for promulgation, thereby proposing policies to support businesses in terms of taxes and human resources.

Communication work will also be promoted through specific plans to widely promote the image of Nghe An to domestic and international tourists. In addition, the province will focus on implementing key investment projects, completing infrastructure and building unique tourism products such as boat tours on Lam River associated with exploiting Vi and Giam folk songs; promoting the development of community tourism and eco-tourism in the western districts of Nghe An.

Along with that, tourism businesses need to coordinate closely in the process of operation, form a "tourism alliance", invest together in common products instead of competing individually. Businesses providing accommodation, tourism services and tourist attractions with fees need to offer preferential policies on service prices for travel businesses bringing tourists to Nghe An. At the same time, travel businesses need to proactively build tours linking destinations in the province, between Nghe An and neighboring provinces, especially the North Central region, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City... to connect Nghe An to the chain of inter-provincial and inter-regional tourism products./.
