Truong Bon is a 5km long steep pass on Thung Nua mountain range, part of strategic road 15A passing through My Son commune, Do Luong district. During the war, this was the traffic artery for the rear to transport food and ammunition to support the southern battlefield.
Road 15A is nearly 200 km long, connecting from National Highway 1 bordering Thanh Hoa, passing through the districts of Quynh Luu, Nghia Dan, Tan Ky, Do Luong to Nam Dan of Nghe An. From Truong Bon, one way goes to Vinh city, crosses Ben Thuy ferry to Dong Loc intersection, Can Loc district; another turns to Linh Cam ferry to Duc Tho and Huong Son districts of Ha Tinh.
Truong Bon National Historical Relic Site was built on an area of over 21 hectares, inaugurated in August 2015, with a total investment of 365 billion VND. Of which, Nghe An Provincial People's Committee allocated 50 billion VND from the budget, the rest was contributed by organizations, individuals and businesses.
The cemetery and the tomb cover of 13 youth volunteer martyrs are 110 square meters wide. Behind is the memorial house of 1,240 heroes and martyrs, 290 square meters wide. These are places where tourists often stop to offer incense every time they come to Truong Bon.
Surrounding the campus are green gardens with more than 1,500 ornamental plants of various kinds donated by organizations and individuals.
The relic site has 21 main items, including a martyrs' memorial, square, bell tower, and traditional exhibition house.
In 1996, Truong Bon was recognized by the State as a national historical and cultural relic. In 2008, 14 Truong Bon youth volunteers were posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces.
Mr. Phan Trong Loc, Director of the Truong Bon National Historical Site Management Board, said that every year Truong Bon welcomes more than 300,000 visitors to visit and offer incense, the peak being the occasion of the anniversary of war invalids and martyrs. This July, it is expected to welcome more than 70,000 visitors.
"In the near future, the unit is planning to upgrade and digitize traditional houses to make it easier for people and tourists to learn about artifacts related to Truong Bon as well as the legendary Highway 15A," said Mr. Loc.
