What is the coldest place on Earth?

The Earth has extremely cold and extremely hot regions stretching from the South Pole to the Arctic Circle, the average temperature in these areas varies from -25 degrees Celsius to 45 degrees Celsius. Besides, the Earth also has regions that are cold all year round and are not even suitable for human habitation.

What is the coldest place on Earth?

According to Live Science, the East Antarctic Plateau is the coldest region on Earth, with temperatures reaching -98 degrees Celsius.

To determine this location, scientists used data from weather satellites at a mountainside on the Antarctic ice sheet and the results were -93 degrees Celsius to -98 degrees Celsius. This study was also published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters.

According to the study, the factors that create low temperatures in East Antarctica occur when clear skies are combined with dry air and low humidity. Both conditions must exist for several days for temperatures to drop to -98 degrees Celsius.

The data measured in East Antarctica can be considered the limit of how cold it can get on the Earth's surface, said Ted Scambos, senior research scientist at the National Snow and Ice Data Center at the University of Colorado-Boulder.

Coldest temperature ever recorded

Before the record low temperature of the East Antarctic Plateau was set in August 2010, the Vostok Research Station, 1,301 km from the South Pole, held the world record for the coldest temperature ever recorded.

During a 10-day period in the Southern Hemisphere in the summer of 1983, weather data recorded temperatures as cold as -89.2 degrees Celsius.

In 2009, researchers discovered that a cold air mass had blocked relatively warm air from the Southern Ocean from reaching the edge of Antarctica, trapping Vostok station in a vortex of icy air. There was also no cloud cover, which would have helped keep the temperature constant for longer.

The study was also published in the Journal of Geographical Research and scientists say that under the right conditions, it could get even colder than at Vostok Station, with the record low temperature possibly reaching -96 degrees Celsius.

Where is the coldest inhabited place?

The village of Oymyakon in eastern Siberia is known as the coldest inhabited place on Earth. Its name means “water that does not freeze” due to the nearby hot springs. The town was originally a destination for reindeer herders, who would take their reindeer to the springs for water.

The average winter temperature in Oymyakon reaches minus 50 degrees Celsius. The village's coldest day on record was in 1924, when the temperature dropped to minus 71.2 degrees Celsius.

What is the lowest temperature in the Northern Hemisphere?

In the heart of the Arctic Circle, amid the Greenland ice sheet, the Klinck weather station recorded the lowest temperature ever recorded in the northern hemisphere on December 22, 1993, dropping to -69.6 degrees Celsius.

The Klinck weather station sits at an altitude of 3,105 metres, near the highest point of Mount Gunnbjørn in Greenland. Researchers working for the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) found the record low temperature while examining the station's 30-year archive.

This data beat the previous record for the coldest temperature ever recorded in the Northern Hemisphere by -2 degrees Celsius. Before Klinck, the record low temperature in the Northern Hemisphere was recorded in Verkhoyansk in February 1892 and Oymyakon in January 1933. Both locations were in Russia.

Which city is the coldest in the world?

Among the coldest cities in the world, Yakutsk in Russia is the coldest. On January 18, 2023, the Siberian city broke a new record when the temperature dropped to -62.2 degrees Celsius - the coldest in nearly two decades.

Just 450 kilometers south of the Arctic Circle, Yakutsk is also the largest city built on permanently frozen land, also known as permafrost. The coldest temperature ever recorded in Yakutsk was set in 1891, when it reached a low of -64.4 degrees Celsius.

The city of 250,000 people is located on the west bank of the Lena River, at an altitude of 95 meters above sea level. In winter, it is covered in icy fog, according to the North-Eastern Federal University of Russia. The fog forms because in cold conditions, hot air from people, cars and buildings cannot rise.
