Eight scientists have been on the list of world's most influential scientists for many years in a row because of their highly cited research and contributions in the fields they pursue.
The ranking was selected by a group of scientists led by Professor John PA Ioannidis and colleagues from Stanford University (USA) based on the Scopus database and announced by Elsevier Publishing House on October 5. Among the 100,000 influential people based on the most cited scientific articles in 2023, 64 individuals are working at Vietnamese universities, of which 47 are Vietnamese scientists. The list was first published in the journal PLoS Biology in August 2019, and to date, 8 Vietnamese scientists have been on the list for 5 consecutive years.

In 2016, Tran Xuan Bach became the youngest Associate Professor in Vietnam at the age of 32. In 2015, he was awarded the International Clinical and Prevention Research Award by the AIDS Research Center, Johns Hopkins University (USA). In 2018, Tran Xuan Bach was the second Vietnamese to join the Global Young Scientists Academy (GYA), and was one of nine members of the GYA Executive Council for the 2018-2019 term. He received the Noam Chomsky Award - Award for Achievement in Research 2020.
He has more than 300 articles in highly regarded international journals on global health sciences. In 2022, he was also one of three Vietnamese scientists to appear in the "Rising Star" ranking - outstanding rising scientific stars in the world.
Dr. Phung Van Phuc , Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, is a Vietnamese scientist familiar in world rankings. He has been on the list of the world's 100,000 most influential scientists for 5 consecutive years, and is also one of 3 scientists awarded the "Rising Star" badge - an outstanding rising science star in the world in 2022. Dr. Phuc has published more than 60 scientific works in international journals in the ISI list with research in the fields of Mechanical Engineering and Aerospace.

Dr. Thai Hoang Chien, Ton Duc Thang University, is one of the faces that consistently appear in the list of the world's top 100,000 scientists. He is a member of the Computational Mechanics (DCM) research group, one of the first research groups at Ton Duc Thang University. Dr. Chien has published nearly 100 research works, many of which are in ISI journals.
Dr. Pham Viet Thanh is currently working in the Nonlinear Systems and Applications (NoSA) Research Group of the Faculty of Electrical and Electronics Engineering of Ton Duc Thang University. He received his PhD in Electronics, Automation and Control of Complex Systems Engineering from the University of Catania (Italy). Dr. Thanh has taught and researched nonlinear systems and circuits at Hanoi University of Science and Technology; then took on the role of Head of the "Intelligent Information Systems" Research Group at Phenikaa University.
He has nearly 180 scientific articles published in prestigious journals, and is the co-author of 3 monographs related to mathematics, design and engineering applications published by Springer and Academic Press. His research interests revolve around chaos theory, applications of nonlinear systems, analysis and design of analog circuits, and FPGA-based digital circuits.
Sharing with VnExpress , Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Thoi Trung is "proud and happy" to be listed in the top 100,000 most influential scientists in the world in 2023 and over the past 5 years. "This is a very meaningful recognition for the efforts and contributions of scientists in the research field," he said.
He said that being listed in the rankings is a great motivation for him to continue to contribute, "affirming that the path he has chosen and his efforts are correct, creating value and influencing the scientific community". For him, being recognized in this list is also a responsibility, requiring him to maintain and improve the quality of research to ensure he has enough capacity to solve new, increasingly difficult and challenging problems.
Associate Professor Trung emphasized the common achievements of the entire research team and companions, expressing the desire to aim for further and higher goals in order to contribute more effectively to the development of science and society.
Dr. Phung Van Phuc, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, shared that he does not pursue and strive for the goal of ranking, because there is no index that can accurately quantify the contributions of a scientist. According to Dr. Phuc, the rankings should only be seen as reference tools, thereby reflecting to some extent the influence of a scientist on the research field and his position on the world science map. However, being on the list for many years also has a certain meaning for him. "This is the motivation for me to continue to strive to contribute a small part to the country's science," he said.
