According to DigiTimes , many of Apple's supply chains confirmed that sales of the 15-inch MacBook Air laptop line were not as expected. The device was first introduced at the WWDC 2023 event in June and went on sale a week later. But in July, the number of units sold was only about 50% of expectations, so some suppliers revealed that they had received requests to reduce the assembly output of this model.
MacBook Air 15 inch launched at WWDC 2023 and available in Vietnam from mid-July
The 15-inch MacBook Air has been officially distributed in Vietnam since July, but has also suffered from the same gloomy situation as the domestic computer market when retailers continuously "broke the bottom" of product prices to test user demand. At the time of release, the standard version (8 GB RAM, 256 GB memory) cost about 32 million VND, while the 512 GB model cost up to 38 million VND.
According to experts, the poor sales of the 15-inch Air series computers are not due to the device being less attractive, but because purchasing power in general is decreasing. The 13-inch MacBook Air, once Apple's best-selling laptop in Vietnam, is also continuously decreasing in price. In the context of cautious spending, users are willing to save a few million VND to choose a model with a smaller screen of only 2 inches, in addition to not much difference in design and configuration.
Previously, the product received many optimistic reviews from domestic sellers. "We expect sales to be equivalent to both previous 13-inch MacBook Air models and can reach 2,000 - 3,000 units sold per month," said Mr. Nguyen The Kha, Commercial Director of FPT Shop system.
Despite being larger than its predecessor, the 15-inch model weighs less than 1.5 kg, equivalent to the 13-inch model in the same line. At its thickest point, it is only 11.5 mm, 40% thinner and about 220 grams lighter than many laptops with the same 15-inch screen size on the market today, although it is not the thinnest.
