ETH Zurich University officially launched the Alps supercomputer – one of the world's fastest supercomputers – at the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre (CSCS) in Lugano, southern Switzerland, with the expectation of helping the European nation lead in reliable artificial intelligence (AI) solutions.
Last June, Alps was ranked as the world's sixth most powerful supercomputer. However, at that time, the computer was not yet fully assembled and was only operating at 60% of its potential. The goal of developing the Alps supercomputer is to meet the demand for massive amounts of data and computational science , while also leveraging AI more effectively.
Andreas Krause, director of the AI Center at ETH Zurich, said the Alps supercomputer helps train complex AI models for critical applications such as medicine and climate research. The supercomputer is housed in 33 cabinets covering an area of 116 square meters (pictured).
According to CSCS, it would take a commercial laptop 40,000 years to perform the tasks that the Alps supercomputer can accomplish in a single day.
