According to a survey released by the Korean Government on March 30, the number of people using artificial intelligence (AI) in the country has nearly doubled in one year and reached a rate of up to one-third of the population.
According to a VNA correspondent in South Korea, in a survey on internet usage conducted by the Ministry of Science and Information Technology with more than 60,200 people from 25,500 households nationwide, the number of people who experienced generative AI services in 2024 jumped to 33.3%, from 17.6% a year earlier. With this result, 1 in 3 internet users in South Korea have experienced generative AI like OpenAI's ChatGPT chatbot.
According to the survey, nearly 82% of respondents said they seek AI-generated services for information research; 44% use them for paperwork support, and 40% for foreign language translation.
The survey also found that about 98 percent of South Korean users said they use instant messaging services, mainly on the KakaoTalk platform. Meanwhile, more than 95 percent use online video platform YouTube.
In addition, online purchases from overseas suppliers increased by 34% in 2024, much higher than the 20% increase in the previous year, due to the penetration of Chinese e-commerce platforms such as AliExpress and Temu./.
