'Seeing but unable to save'

At noon on October 11, authorities were still blocking off the scene of the house fire that killed two children in alley 236 Tran Cao Van Street (Tam Thuan Ward, Thanh Khe District, Da Nang City) to investigate the cause.

In the small alley 236 Tran Cao Van (Thanh Khe, Da Nang) leading to the house, many neighbors are still shocked by the heartbreaking incident.

Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Anh (59 years old, living in alley 236 Tran Cao Van) said that at around 1:30 a.m. on October 11, he was sleeping on the 3rd floor when he heard a loud explosion near his house and woke up with a start.

Running out to check, he discovered that the neighbor's house about 30 meters away was on fire, so he called for help from the neighbors.

Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Anh recounted the incident.

“ When I ran there, I saw the house was engulfed in flames, with black smoke billowing from the third floor. At that time, the police force was also present. However, the door of the house was locked at that time, so no one could open it. Neighbors used sledgehammers to break the lock but could not. The fire was very big at that time, accompanied by many explosions. The whole neighborhood came to help but were helpless and could not approach, ” Mr. Anh recalled.

According to Mr. Anh, the police and people then had to use crowbars and hammers to break the gate's hinges to approach and continue to break the main door of the house to rescue people. When the force broke the door, three people escaped from the first floor of the house.

In the chaos, people living next to the burning house hurriedly called each other to run away for fear that the fire would spread to their houses.

“ At this time, two children were still trapped on the third floor. The Fire Prevention and Rescue Police used a ladder to approach, but the fire was fierce and the smoke was thick. When the police reached the third floor, the two children had already passed away, ” Mr. Anh said sadly.

According to Mr. Anh, the homeowner and his wife had just bought this house for nearly a year. The two deceased children were the homeowner's son and grandchild.

Still in shock, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Cu (65 years old, living in alley 236 Tran Cao Van) said that at around 1:30 am, he was tossing and turning and couldn't sleep when he suddenly heard a loud explosion, accompanied by a strong burning smell. Opening the door and rushing out, he saw the whole alley filled with black smoke.

Re-establishing his position, he determined that the fire was raging at house number 31D. Following the main door and windows, flames and smoke were fiercely coming out. Seeing that there were still people trapped inside, people shouted and tried to break the lock. However, at this time, the electric wires were on fire and fell onto the street, making it impossible for many people to get in.

“ About 5 minutes after the news was reported, the fire department arrived. People in this alley have never seen such a big fire before. It’s heartbreaking! ”, Mr. Cu shared.

As reported by VTC News, at 1:30 a.m. on October 11, people were shocked to discover that house K236/31D Tran Cao Van, Da Nang City was on fire, so they shouted to put out the fire and called the authorities for help.

Upon receiving the news, Tam Thuan Ward Police and Thanh Khe District Fire Prevention and Rescue Police urgently dispatched fire trucks and officers to the scene to put out the fire and rescue people.

The house is located in an alley more than 150 meters deep so fire trucks cannot reach it.

Authorities tried to put out the fire and brought three people, Le Tran Tuan Duc, Le Thi Kim Nga, and Tran Le Gia Kim, out.

However, two children, Tran Minh Gia Dat (2009) and Nguyen Le Thai Thuan (2011), were trapped on the 3rd floor, suffocated from smoke and died.

At 3:00 a.m. the same day, the fire department completely extinguished the fire and the police are currently examining the scene and investigating the cause.
