Ryan Routh, who was arrested after the shooting at former President Trump's golf course in Florida on September 15, has been charged with two counts of possession of a weapon. The FBI believes this was an assassination attempt.
Reuters on September 16 quoted information from US authorities showing that the suspect, Ryan Routh (58 years old), may have been hiding near the golf course for nearly 12 hours. Data showed that a phone related to Mr. Routh was located at the golf course from 1:59 a.m. on September 15, that is, about 11:30 a.m. before the shooting.
Trump assassination suspect formally charged, no shots fired
Acting Director of the US Secret Service Ronald Rowe said at a press conference on the afternoon of September 16 that it was unclear whether the suspect knew Mr. Trump would be playing golf there. The suspect hid outside the golf course's mesh fence.
A Secret Service agent spotted the barrel of a gun protruding from the fence and fired. The suspect fled in a vehicle but was later apprehended by police on the road. At the scene, police found an SKS (aka CKC) rifle with a scope and two backpacks hanging on the fence.
Palm Beach Police Chief Ric Bradshaw speaks at a press conference on September 16 alongside Secret Service and FBI representatives.
Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said at a press conference that agents opened fire on the gunman, about 500 yards (more than 450 m) from Mr. Trump. Mr. Bradshaw said the subject did not fire a shot while the Secret Service said the person did not have a view of Mr. Trump.
According to CNN, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is looking into whether the gunman acted alone or had help. "We have no information to suggest that he acted with anyone else at this time," FBI Special Agent in Charge Jeffrey Veltri said at a press conference.
Subject arrested after shooting on September 15
In an interview with Fox News, Mr. Trump said that it was the statements of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris that led to his assassination in July and that the defendant in the latest case acted on the Democrats' inflammatory words.
According to CNN, the White House announced that President Biden called his predecessor on the afternoon of September 16 and the two had a friendly conversation. President Biden believes that Mr. Trump is safe and the former president thanked him for the call.
"We had a very good call. It involves Secret Service protection," Trump said.
According to Acting Secret Service Director Rowe, after the assassination in July, the agency reinforced the former president's forces at the behest of President Biden and that was ensured on September 15.

Mr. Rowe praised agents for their quick action in the case but said the agency needs more support and resources.
Palm Beach Police Chief Bradshaw also defended his colleagues, saying the suspect was unable to get close enough to fire a shot. "What we did yesterday proves that the system can work because the suspect did not get close enough to fire a shot and we were able to apprehend him and bring him to justice," Bradshaw said.
The police officer also said that former President Trump called him to thank him for the cooperation between the police and the Secret Service. "He knows we work well together and he feels safe," Mr. Bradshaw said.
