(CLO) New York Mayor Eric Adams said authorities have offered a reward and are actively searching for the suspect in the murder of CEO Brian Thompson of the largest health insurance company in the United States, UnitedHealth.
“The net is tightening,” Adams said, declining to name the suspect. “We don’t want to go public at this point because it will only help the suspect escape. Let him believe he can hide behind a mask.”
Authorities believe the suspect may have boarded an interstate bus to leave the city. To aid in the search, the New York Police Department has offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to the suspect's arrest, and the FBI has added $50,000 to the reward.
Brian Thompson, 50, was shot in the back at around 6:45 a.m. on December 4 (local time), just before the company's annual investor conference at the Hilton Hotel on 6th Avenue. After committing the crime, the suspect quickly left the scene on an electric bicycle and ran into Central Park.

Police have collected a number of key pieces of evidence, including fingerprints, DNA and security camera footage of the suspect's movements. A backpack similar to the one the suspect was wearing was found near a playground in Central Park.
Authorities searched the backpack but found only a jacket, no gun. The suspect is now believed to have left New York, with video showing the suspect getting into a taxi and then heading to a bus stop.
UnitedHealth, which has millions of customers in the United States, is one of the nation’s largest insurers. The case has not only devastated the Thompson family, but has also highlighted thorny issues in the U.S. health insurance system.
