On September 22, the General Department of Customs (Ministry of Finance) announced that preliminary statistics in August showed that the number of imported cars of all types registered for customs declarations decreased by 22.4%, equivalent to a decrease of 2,000 cars compared to the import volume in July.
Cars imported to Vietnam in August decreased sharply compared to July
Specifically, the import volume of completely built-up cars of all kinds in August reached 6,929 units, equivalent to a value of 162.4 million USD. Previously, in July, the General Department of Customs recorded the import volume of completely built-up cars of all kinds reaching 8,929 units, equivalent to a value of 217 million USD.
According to information from the General Department of Customs, all types of completely built-up cars registered for customs procedures imported into Vietnam mainly originated from 3 main markets, including: Thailand 3,174 cars, Indonesia 2,620 cars and China 566 cars. The number of imported cars from these 3 markets reached 6,360 cars, accounting for 92% of the total number of imported cars into Vietnam in August.
Of which, imported cars with 9 seats or less were 6,000 units, worth 123 million USD, accounting for 86.6% of imported cars of all kinds and decreased by 20.6% (equivalent to a decrease of 1,557 units) compared to July. This type of car is registered for import declaration mainly at border gates and ports in Ho Chi Minh City and Hai Phong City.
Truck Imports in August reached 331 units, worth 13.3 million USD, down 60.9% in volume and 49.1% in value compared to July. Of which, 214 units were from Thailand, down 22.5%; 85 units were from China, down 71.6%. This line of vehicles was imported through border gates and ports in Ho Chi Minh City, Hai Phong, and Lang Son.
Also in August, businesses imported 598 specialized vehicles to Vietnam through border gates in Hai Phong and Lang Son with a declared value of 25.7 million USD, up 14.1% in volume and 4.2% in value compared to July.
Of these, 465 vehicles originated from China, up 61% compared to the previous month and accounting for 78% of the total number of vehicles of this type imported to Vietnam; 50 vehicles originated from Mexico, down 66.7% compared to July.
Cumulative statistics in 8 months, the number of imported complete cars of all kinds to Vietnam was 86,749 units, down 9.8% compared to the same period in 2022. Of which, cars with 9 seats or less were 69,636 units, down 9.7% and transport cars were 11,578 units, down 4.7%.
According to the General Department of Customs, in August, Vietnam imported 333 million USD worth of auto parts and components of all kinds, down 31.4% compared to July. Auto parts and components were imported the most in 6 markets: China, South Korea, Thailand, Japan, Germany and Indonesia.
In the past 8 months, Vietnam's imports of auto parts and components reached 2.61 billion USD, down 31.4% (equivalent to a decrease of 1.19 billion USD) compared to the same period in 2022.
