Receiving scholarship near Tet, poor student is moved 'to have more money to help mother'

On the afternoon of January 17, at the hall of the University of Sciences - Hue University, many students attended the program to honor students, award scholarships, gifts and support bus tickets to return home to celebrate the Lunar New Year 2025.

On this occasion, the University of Sciences - Hue University awarded 62 scholarships (each worth 2 - 3 million VND) and 111 gifts and bus tickets to return home for Tet to poor students in difficult circumstances, students whose families have just been severely affected by storms and floods in 2024. The total cost of scholarships and gifts is 180 million VND.

Many poor students were given bus tickets and gifts.

The funding for this activity is drawn from the school's scholarship fund and donations from businesses, organizations, units, teachers, philanthropists, alumni and students.

Receiving early Tet gifts, many students were touched and happy to have less worries in the days before Tet.

Bui Anh Duy (from Loc An commune, Phu Loc district, Hue city) is one of the students who received the scholarship this time. Duy has a very special situation, he is the character in the article "Poor student struggles to make a living, nurturing the dream of going to university" in Thanh Nien newspaper published on July 10, 2024.

After school, because his family was poor, Duy had to cycle dozens of kilometers every day to deliver fish sauce, finding a source of income to feed his family of eight. This job was also the only hope of income for the poor student to nurture his dream of going to university at that time.

After the article was published, this determined young man received more than 40 million VND in support from Thanh Nien Newspaper readers.

Meeting Thanh Nien reporters again, Duy happily shared that thanks to the help of readers, he has now fulfilled his dream. Duy is currently a first-year student majoring in public administration at the University of Sciences, Hue University.

“With the help of my uncles, aunts and the school, I have fulfilled my dream. This year, the school awarded me a scholarship, I am very happy because I have more money to help my mother during Tet,” Duy honestly said.

Commenting on Duy, teacher Nguyen Tuong Du, President of the Student Association of the University of Sciences - Hue University, expressed his admiration for the determination of the poor student. “In addition to being a student with good academic achievements, Duy is also an active young man, regularly participating in social activities inside and outside the school. The scholarship Duy won this time is very worthy of his efforts,” said teacher Du.

Speaking at the ceremony, Dr. Phan Tuan Anh, Vice Principal of the University of Sciences – Hue University, shared the difficulties of the students. This activity demonstrates the companionship and care of the entire school leadership and society towards the students.
