The wild green plum tree in Van Don island district now not only helps local people sell simple agricultural products, but many households also combine it with experiential tourism, elevating the unique fruit of this land.
According to the People's Committee of Van Don District, there are nearly 50 households growing green plums with about 100 hectares in the forests and hills. Green plums here have different characteristics from other places when they endure the sun and wind of the island district. Therefore, the green plums of Van Don forest are not too big but are very sweet, sour, and cool.
Decades-old mai gardens delight locals and tourists when they come to Van Don.
Ms. Truong Thi Dao (Dai Mo village, Van Yen commune, Van Don district) said that the green plum trees planted in this locality are often several decades old, some are even over 60 years old. Currently, the retail price of green plums in the garden ranges from 80,000 - 120,000 VND/kg depending on the type of fruit.
In particular, every early summer, locals and tourists flock to Van Don to experience picking green plums and eating grilled chicken on the green hills.
Not only that, when buying green plums here, visitors are also guided by local people on how to process many different products such as soaking in wine, or making soft drinks, dried plums, jams...
Talking to Thanh Nien , a leader of Van Don district said that tourists coming to this island district at any time will have the opportunity to enjoy many other four-season trees such as custard apple, guava, orange, green plum, etc. Van Don district is planning to organize a green plum festival to turn this fruit into a tourist product to welcome visitors every summer.
Van Don green plums are grown on many hillsides, exposed to the sun and wind of the island sea, so they have a characteristic sweet and sour taste.
During this time, many families bring their children to experience picking green plums.
In just 1 hour, visitors can pick a basket of plums weighing about 3 kg.
Van Don plums cost about 80,000 - 120,000 VND/kg depending on the type.
Thanh mai has recently become a branded product for Van Don and helps local people have a good source of income.
