In the context of many important changes in the world semiconductor industry, Vietnam is doing its best to raise the country's position in the global chip supply chain.
The semiconductor industry has a profound impact on the global economy. Semiconductors are the foundation for computing devices, data centers, and play a key role in the development of smartphones, IoT devices, and the coming era of AI.
As the global semiconductor industry witnesses many important changes, Vietnam has become a promising destination with bright growth prospects.
Vietnam is facing the opportunity to participate deeply in the semiconductor industry and has clearly demonstrated its desire to become a link in the global semiconductor supply chain.
Commenting on this story, Dr. Vo Xuan Hoai, Deputy Director of the National Innovation Center (NIC, Ministry of Planning and Investment) said that recently, many leaders of semiconductor technology corporations in the world have come to Vietnam. Large packaging and testing enterprises have also appeared in Vietnam.
That shows that Vietnam has a good semiconductor ecosystem. This is an opportunity for semiconductor companies around the world to come to Vietnam.
“ With the shift of supply chains from other countries, especially China, Vietnam is one of the countries chosen to participate deeply in the global semiconductor supply chain. The important basis for this is thanks to its high-quality and abundant human resources. Therefore, Vietnam has become an attractive destination for the world semiconductor industry ,” said the Deputy Director of the National Innovation Center.
According to Dr. Vo Xuan Hoai, to elevate Vietnam in the global semiconductor supply chain, Vietnam needs to have good infrastructure preparation, including electricity, clean water, and logistics infrastructure.
In recent times, the Government and relevant agencies of Vietnam have made great efforts to invest in infrastructure preparation, both in terms of electricity infrastructure, airports, seaports, and highways to facilitate the development of this industry.
In addition, institutions and policy mechanisms to promote the semiconductor industry are also given attention with specific mechanisms, one-stop shops, and initial investment support policies.
Vietnam also has a national program on human resource development for the semiconductor industry with the goal of training 50,000 engineers by 2030.
Forecasting the future, Ms. Nguyen Thi Bich Yen, senior expert of Soitec Group, commented that the semiconductor industry will develop very rapidly in the period from 2025-2030.
The industry’s economic impact will double over the past 60 years. This is not only an opportunity for Vietnam but also for the whole world.
“ The semiconductor industry will undergo a technical transformation. This will create opportunities for new countries to enter the semiconductor industry ,” said Ms. Yen.
According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Bich Yen, with the development of the AI era, the global semiconductor industry will need more than 1 million workers in the future. Therefore, semiconductor companies have come to Vietnam and Southeast Asian countries to diversify their supply chains.
Vietnam has a strong young workforce, Vietnamese people have a progressive personality, do not surrender in the face of difficulties, this is a strength for Vietnam to be able to move towards providing semiconductor human resources for the world.
From an expert’s perspective, Ms. Yen believes that the production of semiconductor chips requires a huge amount of investment. However, recently, semiconductor chips cannot develop any faster and are becoming more expensive, semiconductor technology is gradually shifting towards advanced packaging. This is an opportunity for Vietnam.
This trend also supports the design issue, designing LED chips will be easier than SoC chips. This is a field that Vietnam can research to anticipate the trend.
“ For long-term development, Vietnam can invest in laboratories for universities, along with software to design LED chips. If it can do that, Vietnam can catch the wind from above instead of the lower level below ,” Ms. Bich Yen stated her opinion.
