Former Russian Prime Minister Sergei Stepashin said that Ukraine's attack on Russia's Kursk border province proves that Moscow's special military operation has turned into a large-scale war by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) against Russia.

In an interview with TASS news agency, former Prime Minister Stepashin emphasized: "When the (Russian) Security Council made the decision to launch a special military operation, no one expected that we would fight against the entire NATO bloc."
According to the former Russian Prime Minister, military operations on the front line have gone beyond the idea of “a special military operation”, especially after what happened in Kursk province.
“The situation in Kursk has highlighted the importance of the military component. I very much hope that our military has some ideas, because the nature of the war has completely changed. This is no longer a special military operation. We see that we are fighting NATO at the maximum level,” he said.
“Military activities continue to escalate, but our military potential and defense industrial capabilities are obvious,” the former Russian Prime Minister concluded.
More than two weeks ago, Ukrainian forces suddenly attacked Kursk province, located on Russia's western border. Ukrainian military commander Oleksandr Syrsky announced on August 20 that his country's forces had advanced 28-35 km into Russian territory, controlling an area of 1,263 km2 with 93 residential areas in Kursk province.
Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on August 18 that Ukraine's goal in the operation in Kursk province is to establish a security buffer zone on enemy territory. A security buffer zone is an area separating two fighting forces, helping to keep Ukraine's border territories out of Russian fire range.
