Xabi Alonso is being sought after by many big names. |
Speaking at a press conference after the national team training session on March 27, the Spanish coach affirmed that nothing was important other than focusing on Leverkusen's upcoming matches.
Asked why he has not spoken about his future – despite previously confirming he will remain at Leverkusen – Alonso replied firmly: “The break has been good, but we have nothing more to say. Everything is focused on the season and the games ahead. We don’t want to be distracted.”
Alonso also said that this year's situation is very different to last season, when he had to make an important decision about his future amid speculation linking him with big clubs such as Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Liverpool. "Last season, I had to make a decision. This season, I don't have to make any decisions," he shared.
With a contract that runs until 2026, Alonso is not under any legal pressure. However, his growing reputation and excellent achievements still make it impossible for the big clubs in Europe to take their eyes off him, especially when the summer of 2025 could see a major change on the coaching bench.
After helping Leverkusen win their first Bundesliga title in history, Alonso continues to be at the heart of this year's title race. The team currently sits second, just six points behind Bayern Munich. Alonso's tactical genius and leadership style continue to be key to Leverkusen's ambitions.
With a series of important matches coming up, including tight Bundesliga fixtures, Alonso insists focus is key: “We are only thinking about the next game. That is the only way to perform well in this crucial period.”
