The Russian Prime Minister signed a decree to add Vietnam, Cambodia and Myanmar to the list of countries whose citizens are granted electronic visas to enter the country.

The Russian government press office issued a statement today saying that Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin has approved a decree expanding the list of countries whose citizens are granted electronic visas.

"Citizens of Vietnam, Cambodia and Myanmar will be able to use single-entry e-visas to enter Russia from August 1. This decision will increase the number of countries on the list to 55," the statement said.

Visa allows foreign citizens to enter Russia once for business purposes, tourism, participation in scientific, cultural, socio-political and sports events. Each visa is valid for 60 days, the duration of stay in Russia does not exceed 16 days from the time of entry.

To apply for a visa, foreign citizens can use the electronic application form on the website of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Russian government in July 2020 passed a law allowing citizens from 52 friendly countries, including some European Union (EU) countries, Japan, China, Turkey, North Korea, India, Indonesia, the Philippines, Bahrain, Iran, Kuwait, Malaysia and Singapore to apply for an electronic visa to enter the country. The policy was suspended from January 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Yevgeny Ivanov said in March that the country is drafting an agreement on simplifying visa procedures with six countries, including Vietnam.

Ms. Pham Thu Hang, then deputy spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said that Vietnam "supports measures to facilitate trade and travel for Vietnamese and other countries' citizens, increase people-to-people exchanges, and contribute to strengthening friendly relations between Vietnam and other countries."

Vietnam and Russia established diplomatic relations in 1950 and decided to upgrade their relationship to a strategic partnership in 2001. Eleven years later, the two countries became comprehensive strategic partners. Relations between the two countries have been strengthened through delegation exchanges and bilateral meetings at all levels.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' consular information portal, Vietnamese citizens must apply for a visa at Russian consular and diplomatic agencies before entering Russia. The visa application requires a number of procedures, including an invitation to enter Russia or travel documents, travel tickets, etc.
