The Kremlin said that Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President-elect Donald Trump have not had a phone call as reported by Western media.
"There was no conversation. This is completely untrue, it is pure fiction," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov commented on the information that President Putin had a phone call with President-elect Trump.
Mr. Putin met Mr. Trump in Osaka (Japan) in 2019
According to TASS, the Kremlin spokesman said that the information published by The Washington Post and Reuters about the phone call between the two Russian and US leaders was "the most notable example of the quality of information published today, sometimes from quite respected outlets".
Asked if Mr Putin had plans to contact Mr Trump, Mr Peskov said there were no clear plans at the moment.
Previously, the US newspaper The Washington Post and the British news agency Reuters reported that after being re-elected as US President, Mr. Trump had a phone call with Russian President Putin. In the mentioned call, Mr. Trump urged Mr. Putin not to escalate the conflict, and at the same time reminded the Russian leader about the large US military presence in Europe.
In addition, the two sides also discussed the goal of peace on the European continent and Mr. Trump wanted to discuss further in the future about an early solution to the Ukraine conflict, according to The Washington Post .
The newspaper also claimed that Ukraine had been informed about the call and had not objected. However, according to Reuters, Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Heorhii Tykhyi later said that Ukraine had not been informed about the call in advance. Therefore, Ukraine could not support or object after it had taken place.
