Protect children's eyes
On August 23, 2024, in Ho Chi Minh City, LOF International Dairy Joint Stock Company organized the signing of a memorandum of understanding with the Central Center for Health Communication and Education, Ministry of Health (T5G); Central Eye Hospital; Institute of Applied Medicine and GMP Dairy New Zealand International Organization on working together towards the community, for a healthy Vietnam, especially implementing activities to raise community awareness in caring for and nurturing healthy eyes for Vietnamese children....
According to Mr. Vu Manh Cuong - Director of the Central Center for Health Communication and Education, Ministry of Health (T5G): " Children's health care is one of the priorities in the policy of caring for, protecting and improving the health of the people of Vietnam, including nutrition and vision care. Decision 5924 dated December 29, 2021 of the Ministry of Health approving the Plan to implement the Vietnam Health Program for the period 2021 - 2025 emphasizes 'increasing the rate of students screened for vision loss, prescribed glasses and instructed on vision training'. According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), by 2025, up to 90% of children in Southeast Asia, including Vietnam, will face the risk of myopia. "
Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Ngoc Dong - Deputy Director of Management, in charge of operations of the Central Eye Hospital, said: " One of the causes of myopia is blue light. Blue light comes from many different sources such as: TV, smartphones and tablet screens. According to many studies, children's eyes absorb more blue light than adults. Exposure to a lot of blue light can cause eye strain, dry eyes, blurred vision, affecting the development of refraction, including myopia" .
Dr. Truong Hong Son - Deputy Secretary General of the Vietnam Medical Association, Director of the Vietnam Institute of Applied Medicine shared: " In terms of nutrition, parents need to pay attention to supplementing nutrients containing Lutein and Zeaxanthin - two substances considered "assistants" to enhance vision and vitamin A - the most essential nutrient for the eyes. Lutein and Zeaxanthin play a role in creating the yellow color of the retinal macula in the eye, playing an important role in receiving and clarifying images, responsible for up to 90% of vision.
These two nutrients are found most in dark green leafy vegetables and yellow and red fruits. In addition, supplementing foods containing the "golden nutrient" vitamin A is also essential for maintaining the light-sensing cells of the eyes, helping to keep the eyes bright and healthy. The visual development of children under 6 years old is very important and requires additional nutrients for the eyes. Therefore, this is the golden stage that requires protection and nutritional supplementation for children's eyes ."
