Myanmar armed forces parade in Naypyidaw
Myanmar's military government has just announced the application of military service regulations for all young men and women from the age of 18 with a service period of at least 2 years, in the context of the government's concern to deal with armed groups demanding more autonomy in many areas.
According to Reuters on February 11, all men aged 18-35 and women aged 18-27 must serve two years in the military, while professionals such as doctors up to the age of 45 must serve three years. The term can be increased to five years during the current state of emergency.
Myanmar has been experiencing instability since the military staged a coup and overthrew the military government in 2021.
Since October 2023, the Myanmar military has suffered heavy casualties while dealing with a coordinated attack by an alliance of three ethnic rebel groups, as well as gunmen supporting the former civilian government.

This is seen as the biggest challenge the military has faced since it first took power from the former British colony in 1962. Analysts say the Myanmar military is struggling to recruit soldiers and has sent non-combat troops to the front lines.
"The duty to defend the country is not only for soldiers but also for all citizens. So I want to tell everyone to proudly obey this people's military service law," said Myanmar government spokesman Zaw Min Tun.
A law on conscription was passed in 2010 but has yet to be enforced. Those who fail to comply face up to five years in prison.
