The US Department of Agriculture has allowed two startups, Good Meat and UPSIDE Foods, to sell chicken grown directly from animal cells, making it the second country in the world (after Singapore) to allow the sale of lab-grown meat to consumers.
In November 2022, these two companies were granted similar licenses by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA); confirming that their lab-grown chicken is safe for consumer health.
In the cultured meat process, cells are taken from animals using a harmless biopsy method, then placed in a “bioreactor” containing a solution of nutrients such as salts, proteins and carbohydrates.
At the right temperature, cultured cells will grow exponentially.
