Promoting green, sustainable growth
The EU’s Global Gateway Strategy is one of the key strategies that the Union has recently prioritized to promote cooperation between the bloc and countries around the world. The strategy focuses on infrastructure investment, thereby promoting sustainable development, meeting global infrastructure development needs and reinforcing the values of the 27-member bloc.
In December 2021, the strategy was first announced with priority areas including digital transformation, green energy transition, sustainable infrastructure and transport, health, and education research. The EU expects to mobilize around 300 billion Euros for the period 2022-2027 for the strategy's projects.
According to Ambassador Nguyen Van Thao, this is the first time the GGF has been held. With the theme "Stronger Together through Sustainable Investment", the Forum will have 6 thematic discussion sessions focusing on a number of basic contents such as promoting sustainable development, energy transition, healthcare development, connectivity and education between the EU and partner countries around the world.
The Ambassador stated that in the context of the world economy facing many fluctuations, the Global Gateway Strategy is expected to create new resources to support developing countries in the process of implementing the dual goal of building infrastructure, connectivity, and implementing sustainable development goals.
The priority areas of the Global Gateway Strategy, as well as the topics of this Forum, are in line with Vietnam's interests and concerns, especially in digital infrastructure, green-clean energy transition, and comprehensive transport connectivity development.
Within the framework of the Forum, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha will deliver an important speech at the thematic session on Green Energy Transition and Green Hydrogen.
The Head of the Vietnamese Delegation to the EU affirmed: "The participation of the Deputy Prime Minister and the Vietnamese delegation will contribute to demonstrating the image of Vietnam as responsible, joining hands with other countries in handling global issues, promoting green and sustainable growth.
This is also an opportunity for Vietnam to reaffirm its strong commitments and determination, as well as policies and actions throughout the 26th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP26) and through the Political Declaration on the Establishment of the Partnership for a Just Energy Transition (JETP Declaration).
Deepening Vietnam-EU cooperation
The first GGF attracted a lot of attention from the international community, with the participation of many leaders of countries around the world. Therefore, Ambassador Nguyen Van Thao said that the discussion sessions on green energy transition, digital infrastructure, healthcare, education, etc. will be an important opportunity for Vietnamese leaders to share their vision, experience, concerns and coordination measures with EU partners as well as friends around the world, thereby contributing to promoting the handling of global issues.
The EU has repeatedly affirmed its respect for Vietnam's role and position in the region, which is demonstrated through the priority content of the bloc's important strategies such as the Indo-Pacific Strategy and the Global Gateway Strategy. |
At the GFF, a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation between the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the Ministry of Finance of Vietnam will be signed to contribute to the implementation of the goals of the JETP statement with Vietnam.
The Vietnamese Ambassador to Belgium and Luxembourg commented: "This is one of the concrete steps in the process of implementing the JETP declaration that Vietnam established with the Group of Seven (G7) and the EU last year. Vietnam's early steps to implement the JETP declaration and sign the Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation with the EIB are highly appreciated by the EU."
In fact, the EU has repeatedly affirmed its respect for Vietnam's role and position in the region, which is demonstrated through the priority content of the bloc's important strategies such as the Indo-Pacific Strategy and the Global Gateway Strategy.
On this occasion, despite a busy work schedule (because the EU combined the organization of the Forum with the European Council meeting), EC President Ursula von der Leyen and senior EU officials still took time to privately receive Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha and the Vietnamese delegation. Ambassador Nguyen Van Thao affirmed: "This once again affirms the EU's respect and expectations for its partnership with Vietnam."
Looking back, Vietnam-EU relations have made important developments, especially since the two sides signed the Free Trade Agreement (FTA). Vietnam is one of four countries in Asia that has an FTA with the EU.
On that basis, Ambassador Nguyen Van Thao assessed that the specific contents and results of the working trip of Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha and the delegation attending the GGF this time will have many important meanings, contributing to further deepening the Vietnam-EU cooperation relationship, with new developments, including opportunities to promote cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
