According to RT , Turkey - a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) - has shown significant interest in joining the BRICS group of emerging economies, viewing it as an important step to boost its international influence and economic potential.
The country has aimed to diversify economic relations and strengthen cooperation with rapidly developing countries.
Joining BRICS will give Ankara access to a large market and the opportunity to boost trade and investment with leading economies of developing countries.
Türkiye has repeatedly faced financial difficulties and restrictions imposed by Western economic organizations such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank (WB).
Joining BRICS would give Ankara access to the BRICS New Development Bank (NDB) and the Contingent Reserve Arrangement, allowing it to secure funding on more favorable terms and with fewer political commitments.
This also significantly enhances Türkiye's international influence and prestige.
However, there are still serious barriers that complicate this process.
Türkiye has close military and economic ties with Western countries, making the issue of joining BRICS more complicated. Ankara's decision to become a BRICS member could face strong opposition from Washington and its Western allies.
In addition, recently, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced that BRICS has decided to temporarily suspend the admission of new members.
The Russian Foreign Ministry website quoted Mr. Lavrov as confirming: "With an overwhelming majority of votes in the 'Group of 10', BRICS has decided to temporarily suspend the admission of new members and focus on helping the countries that recently joined the bloc (at the beginning of the year) integrate into the group."
