(CLO) The upcoming annual BRICS Summit will focus on important issues such as artificial intelligence (AI) governance, global health cooperation, financial reform and expanding global influence.

According to a note from Brazil, this year's bloc chair, the BRICS Summit is scheduled to take place in July 2025.

Brazil will call for a fair and ethical global governance system for AI, stressing that the technology should not be controlled by a few countries or large corporations.

Instead, AI must be guided by multilateral frameworks that ensure equitable access, protect human rights, and prevent algorithmic bias.

Meanwhile, the US continues to maintain its own stance by refusing to sign an international declaration on “inclusive” and “sustainable” AI, creating tension with other countries at the recent AI Summit in Paris.

The BRICS summit will also prioritize integrating this technology into public health systems, with the aim of developing a new platform for cooperation among member states.

Global financial reform continues to be a major focus of Brazil’s presidency. BRICS has repeatedly called for changes to the governance of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to increase representation of developing countries.

The group is also pushing to expand the role of the Shanghai-based New Development Bank and develop a local payments system to reduce dependence on the US dollar.

US President Donald Trump has warned that if BRICS countries try to bypass the US dollar in trade, they will face 100% tariffs. Mr Trump has said the US will not trade with countries that “want to play this game” and has suggested that BRICS’ economic performance could be so badly affected that countries in the bloc will avoid publicly acknowledging their membership.

The summit will also discuss climate change, as Brazil prepares to host COP30 in November. It is calling on countries to increase financial commitments to help developing countries tackle the climate crisis.

In addition, Brazil continues to push for reform of the UN Security Council, which it believes is outdated and ineffective in addressing global challenges. Despite receiving support from Russia, Brazil has yet to secure a clear commitment from China to expand the permanent membership.

The expansion of BRICS to 11 members and the integration of new partners has complicated the decision-making process within the bloc. To address this, Brazil has proposed the creation of a task force to modernize procedures, improve coordination and ensure the effective participation of new members.
