According to Tass News Agency, US President Donald Trump has just said that he has warned BRICS member countries that he will impose tariffs of up to 150% in response to any attempt to create an alternative currency to the US dollar (USD).

"You know, the BRICS countries are trying to destroy our dollar. They want to create a new currency," Mr. Trump told the Republican Governors Association in Washington on February 20.

President Trump also suggested that BRICS nations might want to use China's yuan.

"So when I took office, the first thing I said was any BRICS country that even mentioned destroying the US dollar would be taxed at 150%. We don't want your goods," the US leader added.

According to President Trump, he has yet to receive any response from BRICS following his threats.

"We haven't heard anything from the BRICS countries lately," the White House boss said.

It can be seen that Mr. Trump has increased his threats to the BRICS group. In the past, Mr. Trump announced that he would impose a 100% tax on imports from BRICS countries if they created their own currencies or abandoned the use of the US dollar.

“We will ask these seemingly unfriendly countries to commit that they will not create a new BRICS currency, nor support any other currency to replace the mighty US dollar.

If not, they will face a 100% Tariff, and should expect to say goodbye to selling into the great American economy," President Trump announced on the social network Truth Social on January 30, 2025, almost identical to a post he made on November 30, 2024.

The BRICS group of the world's leading emerging economies originally included Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

At the 2023 summit, the BRICS group expanded for the first time in more than a decade, inviting Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to join.

In January 2025, Indonesia officially became the first Southeast Asian country to join BRICS.

The issue of “de-dollarization,” or reducing the influence of the US dollar in global trade, has received much attention within the BRICS group.
