Venerable Thich Dong Tan presided over the first ceremony to open the temple doors for people to attend the Ancestor's Death Anniversary ceremony.
Located in a land rich in revolutionary tradition and with a large ethnic minority population of Bu Dang district, for the past 13 years, every time the Hung King's death anniversary comes around, this small temple is always filled with incense, lights, tea, fruit and offerings. Here, a large number of monks, nuns, Buddhists and people from near and far have performed traditional rituals such as commemoration, incense offering, flower offering... Thereby, creating conditions for Buddhists and tourists who do not have the conditions to go to Hung Temple - Phu Tho to also offer incense, expressing their respect to the National Ancestor.
Ritual of offering offerings at the temple
Offerings to the Hung Kings at the temple
Every year, the Hung King's death anniversary is organized by the abbot of Duc Bon A Lan Nha pagoda on a large scale, usually taking place on the 9th and 10th of the third lunar month. Both days have very solemn and attractive ceremonies and festivals. On the 9th, there are rituals such as: opening the festival to welcome the Saint (also known as the Tien Thuong ceremony), announcing the petition, opening the ceremony to invite the Saint, and people offering incense. In addition, there are some attractive entertainment contents for the festival such as: performing arts, gong performances, lithophones, lighting a campfire to return to the source, a gratitude night, cooking Central Highlands cuisine, offering incense and trays to pray for a good harvest. On the 10th, there are the following ceremonies: announcing the petition to praise and thank the National Ancestors, the ancestors, and the souls of the martyrs; reporting to the ancestors the results of the past year's crops; vowing to be loyal and serve the country; offering rice and fruit to the wise; and distributing the ancestors' fortune to the people.
People come to offer incense at the temple
Mr. Pham Van Kien in Tan Thien Ward, Dong Xoai City, Binh Phuoc Province was very surprised when he first participated in the Hung Kings' Commemoration Ceremony at this temple. He shared: "I have participated in the Hung Kings' Commemoration Ceremony at Hung Temple - Phu Tho many times, but in Binh Phuoc this is the first time I have seen such a wonderful atmosphere, everything is arranged very solemnly and neatly, if you do not have the conditions to go to the ancestral land, this is also a place where everyone can come to offer incense on the National Ancestor's Commemoration Day".
Meanwhile, Mr. Vu Minh Tuan from Hanoi, on a chance visit to Binh Phuoc, stopped by this temple during the anniversary of the ancestors and was very surprised by what was happening here. "I was quite surprised and excited because I didn't think that in Binh Phuoc there would be a temple to worship the Hung Kings, although it was small but solemn and had many activities like an attractive festival. I believe that wherever my heart turns to my ancestors, it is the same. And today's opportunity to offer incense to the Hung Kings on the land of Binh Phuoc also makes me feel comforted and proud. It proves that no matter where I go, Vietnamese culture is still spreading strongly, I don't see any difference in the spirit of preserving national identity," Mr. Tuan shared.
Some artistic activities in the Hung Kings' death anniversary at the temple
To have a space that is both imbued with spiritual values, the worship of Hung Kings, and many indigenous cultural values as it is today, since 2012, the temple has undergone three renovations before being built solidly as it is today. And every time the National Ancestor's death anniversary occurs, this place becomes a destination for people to return to both offer incense and pay tribute to the Hung Kings and explore the unique beauty in the indigenous culture of the local people. This year, the National Ancestor Hung King's death anniversary is off for three consecutive days, this is also an opportunity for people near and far to have more time to offer incense, worship their ancestors and visit many places in Bu Dang district.
Contributing to the solemn and respectful atmosphere towards the ancestors, a traditional folk ritual team of 16 people led by the elderly in Thong Nhat commune, Bu Dang district, took on the responsibility. Ms. Doan Thi Tat, 70 years old, the leader of the ritual team, said: "Our ritual team was established 20 years ago. The elders in the North who have performed rituals professionally, came here to guide and teach us. For many years now, every time the Hung Kings' death anniversary comes, our ancestor ritual team comes back to perform the rituals of offering incense, flowers, tea, and fruit to the ancestors' altar. We ourselves feel very proud to do this job."
Although far from the ancestral land of Phu Tho, the people of Binh Phuoc still have some places to come to burn incense and commemorate the Hung Kings, including this temple. As a lover of Vietnamese culture, Venerable Thich Dong Tan wants to preserve and guide people to always remember the merits of their ancestors and the spirit of gratitude to their roots. Therefore, the Venerable created a solemn place like this so that people can satisfy their religious needs with their ancestors and with the Vietnamese mountains and rivers.
The sincere devotion to the National Ancestor makes each Vietnamese person more deeply aware of their personal responsibility to their national origin, and more deeply attached to their homeland and Fatherland. From there, they strive to study and build the country, worthy of President Ho Chi Minh's advice: "The Hung Kings had the merit of building the country, we, your descendants, must work together to protect the country."
