Meta says AI Studio will let users create AI characters with customized personalities, traits, and interests, and will allow Instagram creators to use the AI characters as a digital replica of themselves to interact with followers in direct messages.

Users can share their AI characters across the social media giant's various platforms.
Meta says AI Studio will start rolling out to Instagram Business users starting July 29 and will be available to all Meta users in the US in the coming weeks. The tool will be accessible at ai.meta.com/ai-studio and through the Instagram app, with chatbots also accessible via WhatsApp, Messenger, and the web.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said these self-selected AI chatbots could be used for entertainment or as personal support tools, like role-playing how to ask for a raise or resolve an argument with a friend. “You can basically role-play and see how the conversation would go, and get feedback on it,” he said.
The company says AI Studio will allow users to limit who the chatbot interacts with and prevent it from discussing certain topics. The AI Studio usage policy prohibits users from representing anyone other than themselves. It will also place limits on historical figures, religious figures, mass murderers, or “subjects that may be considered hateful or illegal.”
The new tool is built on Meta's Llama 3.1, the latest iteration of its free artificial intelligence models released last week, which are available in multiple languages and have performance metrics that rival paid models from rivals like OpenAI.
Meta's AI Studio manual says users can customize the chatbot by providing a detailed description, along with a name and image, and then specify how the chatbot should respond to specific inputs. Llama will then improvise its responses based on those instructions.
