A new line of Microsoft personal computers specifically designed to run artificial intelligence (AI) programs hit stores on June 18, as tech companies push for wider adoption of chatbot-style AI.
Last month, Microsoft introduced these AI-enabled PCs under the Copilot Plus brand, which allows users to access AI features on their devices without relying on cloud computing services, saving energy, time, and simplifying AI experiences.
According to Techchannel News, the laptops come in four color options, starting at an estimated retail price of $999 and going up to nearly $2,500, on Microsoft.com and the Microsoft Experience Center. US retailer Best Buy claims to have trained tens of thousands of employees to sell and service this new line of AI computers.
According to the initial announcement, the Copilot Plus computer has a dedicated neural processing unit (NPU) for sharper photo editing, along with the ability to transcribe and translate in real time, and a Recall feature that helps remember and track all activities on the user's device. However, at the last minute before the launch, Microsoft removed the Recall feature due to privacy concerns and will only provide this feature as a test.
At the product launch in May, Microsoft predicted that it could sell more than 50 million Copilot Plus computers in 12 months, due to strong demand for powerful features like ChatGPT. “We can’t wait to see how these new AI-powered devices help people be more productive and creative,” said Microsoft President and CEO John S.
Microsoft has been aggressively pushing its generative AI products since the launch of its ChatGPT chatbot in late 2022, with new AI features available across products including Teams, Outlook, and Windows. Google has also been quick to jump on the bandwagon, while Apple has jumped on the bandwagon with the announcement of AI integration on its upcoming high-end iPhones.
