USA Today newspaper on January 5 quoted an announcement from the 28th Bomb Wing stationed at Ellsworth Air Force Base saying that the B-1 bomber crashed at around 5:50 p.m. (local time) while attempting to land at the base airport.
The entire crew of four escaped the plane by parachute and landed safely afterwards.
The 28th Bomb Wing announced that it has opened an investigation into the incident. The US Air Force has not provided further details about the crash.
The B-1 is a long-range, multi-role, supersonic bomber. It has been the mainstay of the US Air Force since the 1980s. Since 1994, the US has no longer assigned the nuclear mission to the B-1.
"The B-1 has been deployed almost continuously in combat operations in Afghanistan and Iraq since 2001," according to manufacturer Boeing.
Boeing originally built 100 B-1s, but fewer than 60 remain in service at Dyess Air Force Base in Texas and Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota.
