According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, the strong cold air mass that landed early on December 16 has so far affected almost all provinces from the North to the Central Central region.

Previously, the meteorological agency forecast that during this cold air mass, the lowest temperature at night and early morning in the midlands, the Northern Delta and the North Central region will generally be from 11-14 degrees Celsius, in the mountainous areas of the North 7-10 degrees Celsius, in the high mountainous areas below 3 degrees Celsius in some places; in the area from Quang Binh to Thua Thien Hue 15-18 degrees Celsius.

According to this forecast, during the day and tonight (December 17), the temperature in the above areas will reach its lowest level, then increase slightly tomorrow.

However, according to previous assessments by meteorological experts, around the night of December 18, cold air is likely to be reinforced, causing temperatures in the entire North to continue to drop.

Mr. Nguyen Van Huong - Head of Weather Forecast Department - National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said that from around December 17-20, the Northern provinces will likely be affected by a very strong cold air mass.

"This is the first widespread cold spell to occur across the North this winter. Between December 19 and 20, there is a possibility of frost and frost in some places, especially in the highlands," Mr. Huong said.

At the same time, the meteorological agency also warned that this severe cold could last after December 20.

Further forecasts from the Hanoi Center for Meteorology and Weather recorded that around December 24, the lowest temperature would drop to 11 degrees, then increase by 1 degree and continue to maintain.

In the North Central region, from the night of December 18 to December 19, there will be scattered showers and thunderstorms in some places. The weather will be very cold.

South Central region, from December 22-25, there will be scattered showers and thunderstorms, locally with moderate to heavy rain. This type of rain will also occur in the South and Central Highlands from December 23-25.

The meteorological agency noted that thunderstorms accompanied by tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong gusts of wind could affect agricultural production, cause trees to fall, damage houses, traffic works and infrastructure. Localized heavy rains could cause flash floods on small rivers and streams, landslides on steep slopes and flooding in low-lying areas.

Strong winds and large waves at sea are likely to affect boating and other activities.

Low temperatures can affect crops and livestock.

At sea: in the Gulf of Tonkin during the day, there will be strong northeast winds at level 6, gusting to level 7-8, waves 2-4m high, rough seas; at night, the wind will gradually decrease. The North East Sea area (including the sea area of Hoang Sa archipelago) will have strong northeast winds at level 7, gusting to level 8-9, waves 4-6m high, rough seas. The sea area from Quang Tri to Quang Ngai and the central East Sea area will have strong northeast winds at level 6, sometimes at level 7, gusting to level 8-9, waves 3-5m high, rough seas. The sea area from Binh Thuan to Ca Mau and the western sea area of the South East Sea area (including the sea area west of Truong Sa archipelago) will have strong northeast winds at level 6, gusting to level 7-8, waves 2-4m high, rough seas.
