The reason why the Anh Trai concert sold out but had to stop at 20,000 spectators

The “Say Hi” Brother concert took place at My Dinh National Stadium on December 7. A week later, the “Surviving Thousands of Challenges” concert took place at Vinhomes Ocean Park 3 (Van Giang and Van Lam districts, Hung Yen).

Initially, the venue for Anh trai vu ngan cong gai was also predicted to be My Dinh Stadium. In Hanoi, this is a rare venue with a capacity of over 20,000 spectators, meeting the heat of Anh trai vu ngan cong gai . However, the organizing team later decided to bring the concert to Hung Yen, completely contrary to predictions.

Both concerts are currently sold out. However, the organizers are not increasing the number of attendees each night due to space constraints.

Hanoi music night look

When the crew announced the location, many audiences were worried, confused, and even argued. A series of questions were raised, such as how to move when the concert venue was quite far from Hanoi city center or whether the facilities and infrastructure were guaranteed for a concert with a capacity of up to 20,000 spectators.

Talking to Knowledge Exchange - Znews, producer and director Hoang Trong Thanh commented that currently, music venues with a capacity of up to 20,000 in Hanoi and neighboring localities are very scarce, making the organization of live shows and concerts difficult.

According to the director, currently in Hanoi there are 3 familiar forms of music performances: the smallest tea room with a few hundred people, followed by events with a few thousand people or 10,000 people at theaters, cultural palaces, sports palaces, conference centers and finally outdoor events with a scale of 15,000-30,000 spectators.

The most familiar to the capital’s audience are the music nights at tea rooms or live concerts, live shows with thousands of people. This form takes place regularly, almost every week at tea rooms or a few shows a month at theaters and conference centers.

Hanoi Opera House (capacity of 870 seats), National Convention Center (over 3,500 spectators), Vietnam-Soviet Friendship Labor Cultural Palace (over 1,000 guests) or Hoan Kiem Theater (900 seats)... are the most familiar and popular choices for Vietnamese artists and event organizers.

Quoc Thien recently held a concert at the National Convention Center. This is also the location where Tung Duong will perform a music night on November 23. With Doa Hong Thorn which took place not long ago to celebrate 17 years of singing, Phuong Thanh chose the location as Ho Guom Theater.

Indoor events with larger capacity can also be held at Quan Ngua Sports Palace or My Dinh Athletics Palace. At these locations, Den and Hoang Dung have held live concerts with about 10,000 spectators.

According to director Hoang Trong Thanh, in general, indoor music events with a maximum capacity of 10,000 spectators in Hanoi are being met. However, of all the above-mentioned locations, only the Hanoi Opera House and the Hoan Kiem Theater are truly theaters, built for music and art.

Other venues, such as the National Convention Center, Quan Ngua Sports Palace, My Dinh Athletics Palace, My Dinh National Stadium, etc., were all built to serve sports and conference purposes, and were later renovated to have more venues for music performances. Therefore, the director believes that audiences and event organizers are having difficulty finding large-scale outdoor performance venues.

Difficulty in choosing outdoor stage

"In Hanoi, we also have the Thang Long Imperial Citadel, which has hosted many large music events. This place has an open space with a capacity of about 15,000 people. However, setting up a performance space here is limited because the space is narrower than a stadium, not to mention having to maintain a certain distance between the stage, stands... and the walls and architecture of this place to avoid affecting the relic. That is also a difficulty," said Mr. Hoang Trong Thanh.

He added that Hang Day Stadium is larger in scale but has not been rented out for music performances recently because it affects the grass field. The most familiar to audiences and the largest in scale is My Dinh National Stadium. The stadium's capacity is up to 40,000 spectators, who can stand on the field and sit in the stands. But this location also has many disadvantages. First, this is not a theater or a venue for official, professional music shows.

“My Dinh Stadium is the venue for major tournaments, so it always ensures infrastructure, power supply, and capacity... But this is not a stadium exclusively for entertainment and artistic activities. The stadium management board only takes advantage of it to rent out whenever there is a music event, and the downside is that it affects the grass field,” the expert said.

With many years of experience in performing music and art stages, Hoang Trong Thanh admits that he in particular and people in the profession in general face many difficulties in finding large-scale outdoor stages.

My Dinh Stadium has full infrastructure but has to avoid major sporting events. On December 15, at My Dinh Stadium, the Vietnamese football team will play Indonesia in the group stage of the 2024 ASEAN Cup. Many viewers believe that this is the reason why Anh trai vu ngan cong thorn cannot be held at this stadium on December 14.

While places with open spaces like Ecopark and Ocean Park (where Anh trai vu ngan troi thorn took place) have guaranteed capacity, they do not have infrastructure. This means that when performing large-scale music shows here, the production team must invest, prepare carefully, meticulously and spend more money.

“Some countries in the world have ‘holy places’ dedicated to music but designed and invested in like a stadium. Meanwhile, events with a capacity of 15,000-20,000 in Hanoi do not have a dedicated stage but are only taking advantage of locations with vacant land or sports stadiums and setting them up. The nature of an outdoor show is that first of all, it requires a large vacant land, in addition to the electrical infrastructure and other related factors, such as accommodation and entertainment around, ” the director said.

As a producer and director, Hoang Trong Thanh commented that the organization of large-scale music nights in Hanoi is currently in a state of patchwork, makeshift and exploitation.

“The desire of those who work in music and entertainment like us is to have our own performance venue for music. To do that, we hope to have the cooperation of the government and major investors. This is important to stimulate music demand, turning Vietnam into a destination in the region. Also because of the lack of performance venues, foreign producers may be hesitant when coming to Vietnam,” he said.
