On October 8, Rostec - Russia's leading defense industry corporation, announced that it had delivered a batch of new BMP-3 infantry fighting vehicles and BMD-4M airborne combat vehicles to the Russian armed forces in the Ukrainian battlefield. These vehicles not only stand out for their powerful offensive and defensive capabilities, but also have significantly improved protection, significantly enhancing the combat effectiveness of the Russian army.
This batch of BMP-3 and BMD-4M vehicles was produced at the Kurganmashzavod plant, a facility owned by Rostec. The vehicles are equipped with additional armor and a mesh screen system to increase their defense capabilities in complex combat situations. In particular, the vehicles are equipped with the "Nakidka" concealment system, which uses non-combustible materials to reduce thermal and radar visibility, contributing to improved survivability on the battlefield.
BMP-3 - "Multi-purpose killer" on land
The BMP-3, one of Russia's leading infantry fighting vehicles, is designed to accompany troops, providing both offensive support and defensive missions. The vehicle is made of a welded aluminum alloy chassis, providing protection against small-caliber shells and shrapnel, while retaining the mobility and agility needed for combat situations.

One of the BMP-3's greatest strengths is its versatile attack capabilities thanks to its extensive armament system. The vehicle is equipped with a 100 mm main gun that can fire high-explosive and anti-tank rounds, a 30 mm automatic cannon for engaging light targets, and three 7.62 mm machine guns for close-range attacks. This makes the BMP-3 a strategic asset on the battlefield, capable of neutralizing a wide range of targets, from infantry to light armored vehicles.
Weighing 18.7 tonnes, the BMP-3 can carry three crew members along with seven infantrymen, making it ideal for troop transport and assault support missions. It can travel over all types of terrain at a maximum speed of 70 km/h on land and 10 km/h in water, allowing it to cross underwater obstacles without the use of bridges or other support equipment.
In terms of equipment, the BMP-3 is equipped with an advanced fire control system that optimizes weapon accuracy, night vision equipment for operating in low light conditions, and an NBC (nuclear, biological, chemical) protection system to ensure the safety of the crew and soldiers. With a range of up to 600 km, the BMP-3 is capable of performing long-term missions without the need for continuous refueling.
The BMP-3 is not only the mainstay of the Russian armed forces, but is also exported and used by many other countries such as Azerbaijan, Iraq and the United Arab Emirates. This demonstrates the versatility and combat power of this vehicle in modern conflict zones.
BMD-4M: Enhanced Rapid Deployment Capability
The BMD-4M is a Russian airborne combat vehicle designed specifically to support airborne units on the battlefield. Weighing just 13.5 tons, the BMD-4M is highly maneuverable, reaching speeds of 70 km/h on the ground and can be easily transported by air, allowing paratroopers to deploy quickly and effectively in emergency situations.

In terms of weapons, the BMD-4M is not inferior to the BMP-3, being equipped with a 100 mm main gun, a 30 mm automatic cannon and a 7.62 mm PKT machine gun. This weapon system allows the vehicle to fight against a variety of targets, from light armored vehicles to fortified defensive positions and enemy infantry. The BMD-4M is also equipped with armor that protects against 30 mm bullets in the front and 7.62 mm bullets on the sides, ensuring the safety of the crew in fierce combat situations.
The vehicle can carry a crew of two and six infantrymen, providing rapid and safe deployment on the battlefield. The BMD-4M's automated fire control system improves the accuracy of weapons, while night vision devices support operations in low-light conditions. Similar to the BMP-3, the BMD-4M is also equipped with an NBC protection system and a fire detection and suppression system to ensure maximum safety for the crew and soldiers.
With a range of 500 km, the BMD-4M can carry out strike missions deep in enemy territory without the need for continuous resupply. Currently, the BMD-4M is used exclusively by Russian airborne forces, providing a balance between mobility, protection and firepower in rapid combat operations.
Rostec's production capacity
According to Bekhan Ozdoev, director of the industrial complex of Rostec's weapons and a member of the Russian Union of Mechanical Engineers, the Kurganmashzavod plant increased BMP and BMD production by 20% in the first nine months of 2024 compared to the same period last year. This is part of Rostec's efforts to meet the growing needs of the Russian military amid the conflict in Ukraine.
Rostec currently produces more than 80% of the weapons and equipment used in combat zones, including artillery systems, air defense systems, unmanned aerial vehicles, guns, ammunition and armored vehicles such as the BMP-3 and BMD-4M. Many Rostec facilities operate 24/7 to ensure timely production and to fulfill defense orders quickly and efficiently.
