Plastic products have become an indispensable part of modern life because of their convenience. However, plastic is also the main cause of environmental pollution when it becomes waste. Currently, the province generates an average of 800 tons of household waste every day, of which 10 to 20% is plastic waste, and in some urban areas, this number is even higher.
In daily life, the main source of plastic waste comes from daily activities, residential areas, shops, markets, supermarkets. In industrial production, plastic waste comes from construction and production activities in factories, enterprises... If not treated properly, spontaneous burning of plastic waste in the environment causes air pollution, seriously affecting human health. Uncontrolled burning of plastic waste also causes many other risks such as: Smoke and dust can cause respiratory diseases, especially affecting children, the elderly and people with chronic heart and lung diseases... The habit of using disposable plastic products such as plastic bags, plastic bottles, food containers, packaging... is causing the amount of plastic waste to increase. To reduce the amount of plastic waste, nothing is more effective than changing the living and consumption habits of each individual and family.
Recognizing the importance of reducing plastic waste, on November 28, 2024, at BRG Mart Pho Noi Supermarket (Nghia Hiep Commune, Yen My District), the Department of Industry and Trade held a launching ceremony for the movement "Say no to disposable plastic products and hard-to-decompose nylon bags" at supermarkets, shopping malls, markets and convenience stores. Thereby, it is recommended that all levels, sectors and units implement a model to limit the use of disposable plastic products, and at the same time organize peak propaganda campaigns to raise public awareness. The province aims to use 100% environmentally friendly packaging in shopping malls and supermarkets by 2025; at the same time, collect, reuse, recycle and treat 85% of the amount of plastic waste generated.
In Hung Yen city, many businesses have proactively implemented green consumption models. Ms. Le Nhu Thao, owner of a food store on Dien Bien Street (Le Loi Ward), shared: "The products at the store are all organic, so from the beginning I chose to use biodegradable bags and recycled paper bags instead of regular plastic bags." In addition, the anti-plastic waste movement has also received positive responses from organizations and unions.
Currently, the province has established over 280 clubs for "Women to limit the use of disposable plastic products" and "Women to limit the use of plastic bags". In Bao Khe commune (Hung Yen city) alone, all 5 women's associations have established clubs for women to limit the use of plastic, attracting more than 100 members. Chairwoman of the Bao Khe commune Women's Union Tran Thi Ngoc Anh said: On average, each year, club members organize 15 to 20 collection campaigns, collecting tons of plastic scrap per year. Members also actively promote and raise awareness among people about fighting plastic waste.
Reducing plastic waste is not only the responsibility of the government and functional sectors but also requires the cooperation of the whole society. Each person can contribute to reducing plastic waste with small actions such as: Using cloth bags, paper bags instead of plastic bags when going to the market, supermarket. If each individual changes their consumption and living habits, plastic waste will no longer be a big concern, contributing to building a green, clean and safe living environment.
